Today we’re celebrating a big milestone!
This young lady has completed her program, and we couldn’t be more proud of the hard work she put in to get here. She showed growth, resilience, and determination every step of the way. As she heads into her next chapter, we know she’s going to do great things.
We’re cheering her on, always.

Sometimes healing doesn’t start with words.
When traditional therapy felt overwhelming, one of our Abbott House therapists tried something different by bringing photography into sessions. For Jaiden, a young person who came to us struggling with self harm and suicidal thoughts, the camera became a way to slow down, stay present, and work through big emotions in a safe and creative way.
What started as a coping tool grew into confidence, connection, and hope for the future.
Jaiden’s story is a powerful reminder that healing looks different for every young person and that meeting kids where they are can change everything.
At Abbott House, music becomes more than notes on a page. During sessions like this one, youth build focus, confidence, and connection through shared musical experiences.
Whether it’s learning a new song or simply playing side by side, music therapy offers a safe, creative outlet that supports healing and self-expression.
We’re grateful for the small, meaningful moments that help our kids grow in big ways.
Our kids thrive when their basic needs are met and their imaginations are sparked. Abbott House is always collecting items that make a big difference in the lives of the children we serve.
From arts & crafts supplies like crayons, coloring books, and LEGOs to sports gear, board games, books, and even twin-size sheets, every donation matters.

Not every moment is big.
Sometimes it looks like homework at a desk, a game on a tablet, or winding down in a quiet room.
These everyday moments matter. They mean a young person feels safe enough to focus, learn, and just be a kid.
That’s what a foster home should feel like.

Yesterday brought a new group of girls to Reclamation-Ranch and their Helping With Horsepower program. Equine therapy has become such a meaningful and transformative part of the therapeutic services we offer Abbott House youth, creating space for connection, confidence, and healing.

We are incredibly grateful to the John T. Vucurevich Foundation for their generous $400,000 investment in Abbott House’s Rapid City Capital Campaign.
Because of their support, two new foster homes are now open in Rapid City. The Fritz and Mary Home for boys and Jodie’s Home for girls welcomed foster parents and youth late last month.
This gift is already making a difference by creating safe, supportive homes for young people who need stability and care. Thank you for believing in the future of our youth and helping make these homes possible.
“They taught me how to find the light in the darkness.”
These are the words of a young woman who completed her program at Abbott House.
Healing doesn’t happen all at once. It happens through steady support, trusted relationships, and people who believe in you even when you struggle to believe in yourself.
This is what impact looks like.

We want to say congratulations to this young lady for finishing her program with us.
She has a way of making friends wherever she goes, with peers and staff alike, and our building won’t feel quite the same without her. We’ll miss her creative mind, her love of all things pink, and her wonderfully silly personality.
We’re so proud of how far she’s come and are wishing her all the best as she heads into her next adventure.

Foster Family Support Specialists play an essential role at Abbott House by stepping in when foster parents need time to rest and recharge. Their care ensures that children continue to feel safe, supported, and nurtured, no matter the circumstances.
This opportunity is ideal for those who want to make a difference without committing to full-time fostering. It also provides valuable experience for anyone interested in the field of youth care.
The girls in our PRTF recently made a very special birthday card for one of their favorite volunteers, Dave Thompson.
Dave hasn’t been able to be at Abbott House as much lately while focusing on his health, but the girls have never forgotten him or the impact he’s had on their lives. From patiently breaking down complicated math formulas to always showing up with kindness and encouragement, Dave means so much to both the girls and our staff.
Two of Dave’s former students volunteered to personally deliver his birthday card along with some freshly baked bread, sharing birthday wishes and reminding him that he will always have a place in our hearts at Abbott House.💙

Today we are faced with anxiety and uncertainty. We have questions about our future and the new reality each one of us will face. We feel like we are experiencing on ongoing earthquake that never stops shaking and changing things.
Ironically at Abbott House we are helping children who have lived with this feeling of vulnerability for much of their lives. Not a feeling of vulnerability about a virus, but a feeling of uncertainty about their lives. You see, children who have lived through abuse, neglect and other negative events understand the feeling of life being out of control.
In our programs we see the fallout from these life events. Even in this time of uncertainty, we continue to work hard to provide safety and stability for our young people and our staff. We know that during times of sickness and dramatic change, our own children need us more than ever. It is the same for the young people in our care. Our commitment to South Dakota children has never been stronger thanks to the dedicated Abbott House employees who are working tirelessly to maintain a sense of normalcy for our youth.
Our residential treatment program is operating as usual with girls attending school and living in our treatment facility like they always do. They miss seeing the many volunteers who come to tutor, entertain or educate them, but they understand limiting visitors will keep them safe.
In our Bridges therapeutic foster homes in Rapid City and Mitchell, we are above capacity. There are so many children who need a family and a safe home right now. Our foster parents are truly amazing. Every one of our homes is operating like a "home school," with scheduled class times and study times for each home so our young people can adequately access computers and other technology to complete classroom assignments. They are having virtual visits with social workers and coordinating telehealth with counselors.
Perhaps the students who are struggling the most are those who are no longer employed. Some of our foster children and our young adults in the independent living program lost their jobs due to the situation. Because of these hardships, we have waived rent for all of our independent living occupants and are helping to pay for their basic needs such as food, medicine, clothing, transportation, and other basic needs while also offering encouragement during this difficult time.
Yet, despite all of these challenges, our amazing and dedicated staff continues to encourage and support each other, while serving our youth and families with understanding and compassion. We know there are still challenging weeks ahead.
We cannot do this alone. The financial burden being felt by so many is also persistent at Abbott House. If you would like to help the youth and our staff with necessary masks, groceries, transportation and other medical needs, please use the following link to give online.

Thank you for helping during this challenging time. We will get through this TOGETHER and we will be stronger in the end.
