Isolation after Trauma!
“Why do trauma survivors isolate themselves so much?”
Isolating after trauma isn’t always a conscious decision.
Often, it comes from a need for self-protection.
Sometimes it’s emotional exhaustion.
Sometimes it’s the nervous system saying, “I don’t feel safe yet.”
Sometimes it’s the result of feeling alone, abandoned, or misunderstood.
For many trauma survivors, dealing with overwhelming emotions can feel impossible. Being alone often seems like the easiest and safest option.
Isolation isn’t always about pushing people away.
Sometimes it’s about trying to survive.
Support and understanding are some of the best tools for combating isolation.
If you’re watching someone isolate, try not to focus on fixing them or forcing them to open up. Instead, remind them they’re not alone. Consistent, non-judgmental support matters more than you know.
If you’re realizing you might be isolating yourself, this part is hard. Trauma teaches people to withdraw, but healing often happens through safe connection. Reaching out to someone you trust can be an important first step.
