Yesterday, I decided to go rollerblading in the evening with my kids up at the church parking lot that had been freshly re-surfaced. Once we got the hang of it and I could get in that flow state, that groove where you’re gliding and moving in rhythm, I began to feel so much better in my body-mind. Why? Because I changed my energy. And when you change your energy, everything changes.

As we were skating, Rosie, my nine year old daughter says to me, “Mommy, sometimes I have these bad thoughts that I’ll just be doing something and something bad is going to happen like a fire or somebody is going to get me and my stomach doesn’t feel good.”

She’s been sharing a lot of thoughts like this with me lately.

I say to her, “Okay. That’s called anxiety and it’s an emotion. It’s what you are experiencing. Would you like to experience something else instead?”

“Yes!,” she says.

“So, how about if we do our Heart-Centered Breathing together and see what happens.”

So, we do.

Because advice doesn’t really help. She’s having an experience, a feeling, and feelings are the language of the body, so it’s into the body we must go if we want to have a different experience, if we want to change our energy.

After just a few slow, deep, complete breaths, breathing together, I ask Rosie what she’s experiencing now...

Your health is happening all the time! Not just in the gym or at a class but always… when you’re alone with your thoughts, when you’re lying in bed, when you’re washing your hands, when youre walking to your car.

The greatest, most unrecognized source of disease might just be the misalignment between our mind, heart and emotions - what we’re thinking, how we’re feeling, what we’re saying and what we’re doing.

Get in sync!

I always knew this stuff was a good idea but the strong-willed stubborn “yeah but why” child in me didn’t actually do it until I understood WHY.

Maybe wouldn’t have spent so much time as a child taking all those tests in doctors offices for my stomach problems.

Could’ve maybe avoided 2 years of wearing a heavy duty brace with the back surgery when I was 16.

Might could’ve avoided allllll those drugs and all that booze, all that depression and self-loathing for… years (decades?)

AND… all that lead to me being one messy and wonderful human being here in earth school now teaching the what, why and how of the other side of dis-ease - health and vitality - to other messy and wonderful human beings who could use a little help from someone who gets it.

Creating a You Tube playlist for anyone who wants a “buddy” on your 40 Day journey. It’s been invaluable to have my best friend and husband with me every day. We’re on our 3rd time through!!

When we think of health, we think of the physical aspects like diet and exercise - or our outer fitness... but what about our inner fitness?

When we spend too much time in the sympathetic branch of our autonomic nervous system, or the fight or flight branch, we become dysregulated. We need this branch to get stuff done, but too much is too much. Modern society is set up as almost this onslaught of doing and producing with constant stimulation. Too much and we don't feel like ourself. We don't feel good. We don't feel healthy.

Our bodies are highly intelligent and are always seeking homeostasis or order or rhythm for us. We can help our bodies do their job better by keeping all aspects of our nervous system toned - not just the sympathetic branch. It's like going to the gym and only working the pecs and biceps. What about the legs?! And we wonder why our backs hurt.

The vagus nerves are the two longest cranial nerves in our body and they run right down the front of our bodies. They're the super highway for sending information from the heart to the brain to the body. They're the biggest players in the parasympathetic branch of our nervous system - the branch that's responsible for healing, repair, digestion, regeneration. If this system is out of tone, then no matter what great food you eat or how much you exercise, your system won't have the energy to absorb, repair, digest and heal to its fullest capacity.

So, we've got to prioritize inner fitness as well. And we can do this in many ways.

Here are some suggested "workouts" for your inner fitness:

taking more pauses for reflection and contemplation
listening to relaxing music
leaving more space in your day
adding in time-outs to rest (I call these time-ins)
humming
singing
breathing
being with people who feel supportive and safe
safe touch like massage and petting animals
gentle movement
time in nature
prayer
meditation
practicing feeling elevated emotions

Where your attention goes, energy flows. Just by giving your heart your attention, by placing a light touch on your heart - by slowing, deepening, quieting, completing a breath for a minute or two - you've just switched over to toning your inner world. You're doing an inner workout, toning and nourishing those vagus nerves. Add in an elevated emotion of the heart, like gratitude, and you've just done a super workout! 🏋️‍♂️💪🏼

It's not hard, it's just about making it a priority - the quality of your life depends on it. And like I always say... you're breathing anyway! Just bring your loving attention to it and you're there! No workout clothes, gym memberships, fancy shoes required. 💗
