Pediatric patients get hospital room makeovers at USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital
With a goal of bringing joy to children and their caregivers, a team from the group Once Upon A Room Mobile surprised pediatric patients today with room makeovers at USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital. Volunteers with the not-for-profit group brought in new blankets, pillows, banners, games, posters and toys for four patients. Children's & Women's is the first hospital in Alabama to take part in the surprise makeovers for patients from Once Upon A Room.
"This is the best day ever," said a 10-year-old little boy after he was wheeled into his room decked out in football banners and posters. The Mapp Child and Family Life Program coordinated with Once Upon A Room to bring the program to USA Health.
Mardi Gras at Children's & Women's Hospital
As carnival season continues in Mobile, the Masked Order of Mystic Miracles paraded through the halls of USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital on Wednesday, tossing beads and cups to crowds gathered for the annual Mardi Gras parade.
Hospital staff members pushed patients in wheelchairs while others rolled down the route in wagons emblazoned with purple and gold decorations. Members of the Mapp Child and Family Life Department organize the event to help bring some normalcy to hospitalized patients and their families.
Senior Bowl players visit Children's & Women's Hospital
College football players in town for the 75th Annual Reese’s Senior Bowl said goodbye to virtual visits and hello to in-person fist bumps, high fives and even a few hugs on Friday. For the first time since the pandemic, dozens of players descended on USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital to meet patients and staff, share autographs and take photos.
Because of safety measures in place during the pandemic, the annual event moved to a virtual format for three years. On Friday though, players, mascots, and cheerleaders gathered in the hospital’s cafeteria before heading upstairs to spread some cheer. The Senior Bowl visits are organized through the hospital's Mapp Child and Family Life Program, which is aimed, in part, at normalizing a child's stay at Children's & Women's Hospital.

Happy Holidays from USA Health!
Spreading holiday cheer: Young patients treated to trees at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital
When you can't leave the hospital for the holidays, sometimes the holidays come to you. That’s what happened on Wednesday, Dec. 13, when patients at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital visited an outdoor courtyard that was transformed into a miniature tree-farm, complete with inflatables and a sprinkling of snow.
As flurries floated by, young patients had a chance to visit the courtyard and pick out a tree and ornaments to decorate their hospital rooms. Some were pushed in wheelchairs, while others made their way on walkers to experience the joy of getting to choose their very own tree.
A team from Ace Hardware, in partnership with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, provided three-foot metallic trees, plus treats, ornaments and volunteers to assist young patients and their families with the timeless holiday tradition.
Carlton Paris, an owner of Paris Ace Hardware stores on the Gulf Coast, said watching the children’s faces light up was the best part of the day. “It’s been awesome to see them pick their own trees,” he said. “We are excited to share Christmas with those who aren’t able to be at home.”

Halloween 2023 at USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital
When you can't leave the hospital for Halloween, Halloween comes to you. Staff at USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital dressed up and handed out candy Tuesday morning, Oct. 31, to young patients who left their rooms to trick or treat in the courtyard and breezeway of the hospital. Those who couldn't leave their rooms were treated to bedside deliveries of jack-o-lanterns filled with candy and other novelty items.
Geri Moulton Children's Park Rededication
A Celebration Among the Sculptures: After months of work to enhance shaded sidewalks and a feature pond flanked by whimsical creatures, renovations have been completed on Geri Moulton Children’s Park on USA Health’s campus in midtown Mobile. A celebration was held on Friday, Oct. 27, to rededicate the park that spans from Springhill Avenue to Center Street at the entrance of USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital. Geri Moulton, wife of the late Gordon Moulton--the University of South Alabama’s second president--shared stories about the park that opened in 2001.
Ocean | Children's & Women's Hospital
Soon after she was born, Ocean Kelly developed chronic health issues: ear infections that wouldn’t end, sleep apnea, and stiffness in her joints. A month before her third birthday, she was diagnosed with Hurler Syndrome, also known as mucopolysaccharidosis type I, a condition in which the body does not produce an enzyme that breaks down cell waste. Every Wednesday for the past six years, Ocean has received enzyme replacement infusions at USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital. Now, she is a thriving 9-year-old who loves to sing and dance and take exercise classes with her mom. She will continue the weekly six-hour infusions for the rest of her life. While there is no known cure for the syndrome, treatment can prolong life expectancy and often alleviates some symptoms. Ocean looks forward to the visits, her mom says, because of the exceptional care: “They have encouraged her to blossom. From the time she walks through the door of the infusion room until the time she leaves … she knows she is loved. They are excited to see her. They are interested in her. They let her know that as a person she is valued here, and that has been the best.”
