February is Low Vision Month and we wanted to make you aware of the leading cause of vision loss in people age 50 and older, age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

While AMD rarely causes total blindness, it can make it very hard to do things that require sharp vision, such as reading, sewing, cooking or driving; it can also make it difficult to see in dim light.

What can you do? Be aware of your risk factors such as
👁️ Family History
👁️ Age, Race & Gender
👁️ Light colored eyes
👁️ Smoking
👁️ Heart disease
👁️ High blood pressure (hypertension)
👁️ High cholesterol
👁️ Obesity
👁️ High sun exposure
👁️ Poor diet

If you begin to realize challenges with your vision, there are treatment options available! Call 251-435-EYES to schedule an appointment with one of Diagnostic & Medical Clinic's ophthalmologists!

As we encounter winter temps, Infirmary Health encourages you to use caution and limit your exposure to the elements.

Extended exposure to freezing temps could potentially cause hypothermia. Hypothermia is a condition that happens when your body temperature falls below 95°F. When your body temperature drops to dangerously low levels, your brain and other organs can no longer function properly. If not treated promptly, hypothermia can lead to cardiac arrest (when the heart stops beating) and eventually death.

Dr. Michael Holland, Diagnostic & Medical Clinic said with that in mind, these low temperatures shouldn’t be taken lightly. “Usually, one of the initial signs of hypothermia is shivering,” Holland said. “Shivering is your body is trying to warm itself up by expanding energy in the muscles. That is dangerous from a standpoint of it can cause side effects from muscle damage, but dehydration is the big one.”

How can you prevent hypothermia?
❄️ Dress in layers: Wear warm, moisture-wicking clothing and cover extremities (hands, feet, head).
❄️ Avoid prolonged exposure to cold and wet conditions.
❄️ Stay active to generate body heat.

Hypothermia is a medical emergency. If you have symptoms of hypothermia and a low body temperature, you should call 911 or go to the emergency room immediately. Infirmary Health has five emergency rooms in Mobile and Baldwin County open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Find a location near you at: https://www.infirmaryhealth.org/locations/
