It was impossible for us to know then what we know now. We were doing the best we could with the tools that we had at the time. We're responsible for our actions, but there may have been reasons why we behaved the way we did. Understanding this might help us to forgive ourselves for poor choices that we made in the past.

Are we perpetrating upon ourselves abuse similar to the abuse we suffered at the hands of our abusers? Are we victims of generational trauma, and repeating that trauma on ourselves? Something to think about...

SMART Recovery DOES NOT require us to label ourselves an “addict” or an “alcoholic.” SMART discourages the use of all negative stereotypes or disparaging labels. We are free to refer to ourselves however we wish, but recovery will be more likely to succeed if we refuse to attach unhelpful stereotypical pejoratives to ourselves.
