Does being ourselves hurt anyone? No? Does it result in us hurting ourselves? No? Then it seems that being ourselves isn't causing any problems. So we can go ahead and be the person we want to be without shame. And the people who object can mind their own business.

It was impossible for us to know then what we know now. We were doing the best we could with the tools that we had at the time. We're responsible for our actions, but there may have been reasons why we behaved the way we did. Understanding this might help us to forgive ourselves for poor choices that we made in the past.
