Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie became the first woman to be elected as Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in year of 2000. She later served as President of the Council of Bishops, becoming the first woman to serve as Titular head of the AME Church. She is now serving as the President and General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the United States of America.

Here is a Black History note for today-

Did you know that Claudette Colvin was the first African American to actually refuse to give up her bus seat to a white passenger, and not Rosa Parks? Claudette was just fifteen years old, when on March 2, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, on her way home from school, the bus driver asked her to move so that the white woman could sit down. By refusing, Claudette was removed from the bus and arrested. After being arrested, Claudette became one of four plaintiffs in the case Browder v. Gayle, which ruled that Montgomery's segregated bus system was unconstitutional.
