Pain doesnโ€™t show up on a scan because itโ€™s your nervous systemโ€™s response to a situation, not just tissue damage. This is why surgery often doesnโ€™t guarantee pain relief.

After an injury, your nervous system goes into protection mode. It knows that newly healed tissue is weaker, so it keeps symptoms around to stop you from overdoing it. Thatโ€™s a normal responseโ€”until those symptoms stick around too long, which happens often.

When pain lingers, the best way to move forward is by building your nervous systemโ€™s confidence in your safety. This confidence comes from building strength, coordination, control, and mobility to show that your body, especially the previously injured areas, is resilient.

No, but it's a damn good comparison for training them.

The hole in the donut? Thatโ€™s the part of the tendon that's wreckedโ€”itโ€™s not coming back. But the rest of the donut? Thatโ€™s your healthy, functioning tendon tissue.

When you stop exercising and your tendon becomes weaker, the hole in the donut becomes bigger and bigger. Effectively making the donut seem smaller and smaller.

But guess what? Just like muscle, tendons can grow. And they ๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ฆ time under tension!

Bottom line: the more donut you have, the better you are

Would you take weight loss advice from someone whoโ€™s overweight? Would you listen to a smoker telling you how to quit? Or trust someone whoโ€™s physically falling apart to guide your rehab? No way. Thatโ€™s the fastest way to lose respect and stop listening.

I donโ€™t have time for people who donโ€™t walk the walk. If you havenโ€™t put in the work and lived through the grind, donโ€™t even try giving advice. I want someone whoโ€™s been in the trenchesโ€”someone whoโ€™s beaten obesity, quit smoking, fought back from injury, and shows up every damn day to live it.

At Return2Play, we donโ€™t mess around. We work exclusively with people who are serious about fitness.

Now, Iโ€™m not saying Iโ€™m the fittest person around, and I donโ€™t need to be. But Iโ€™ve been overweight. Iโ€™ve been hurt. Iโ€™ve been in a bad spot, both physically and mentally. I fought my way out, and Iโ€™m still on that journey, grinding every day to stay on top of it.

We're not here to say cortisone shots are bad or off the table.

But letโ€™s be clear: there are times when theyโ€™re useful, and times when theyโ€™re not.

Like surgery, once youโ€™ve had a cortisone shot, you canโ€™t undo it.

Now that you know exactly what they can and canโ€™t do, when are they actually helpful?

When the pain is severe enough to wreck your lifeโ€”disrupting your sleep, daily activitiesโ€”and you canโ€™t even start rehab because of it.

In cases like this, cortisone shots can be a game-changer, providing just enough relief to get you moving again.

But in almost every other case? Youโ€™re better off letting your body heal on its own, allowing the inflammation to run its course, and focusing on active rehab.

An injection isnโ€™t a fix. Itโ€™s a temporary patch at bestโ€”and it doesnโ€™t always work. Plus, it comes with risks.

If youโ€™re in pain and a doctor suggests an injection before even trying conservative treatments, donโ€™t just accept it. Demand to explore other options first.
