Friends we just discovered that our voicemail was accidentally disconnected about 6 weeks ago when we changed internet providers. If you have tried to reach us without success these past few weeks we do apologize. The voicemail is now back up and running and you can leave us voice messages once again. Big Valley Midwives is available for due dates in February, March, April and May. If a home birth is what you really want, its not too late to hire us. We are currently scheduling interviews in person or by video call for 2026 due dates.

We attended a lovely day time water birth this afternoon for a first time mother. It’s the third day of October and all of our October babies arrived early so suddenly the midwives have an unexpected two weeks off call. Thanks babies.

Big Valley Midwives had a surprisingly busy weekend. A VBAC at home on Friday night, a repeat client with a very fast birth at home on Saturday night, and on Sunday night a water birth with a mother who is new to our practice but not new to home birth. Very polite babies for coming on separate nights. The weather was lovely, the night skies were beautiful to drive in, the babies adorable and the mothers are all rock stars. What a perfect weekend.

Brooke and Lucinda took turns being off call so we could each have a summer vacation. After a relaxing summer of visiting family, attending live performances, playing in the rivers, lake hopping, soaking in hots springs, camping, and stargazing both midwives are now rested up and back on call.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the very first birth I attended. It was a precipitous VBAC at home. The image below was taken by a (unknown to me now)professional photographer who captured my very first 4 handed catch at a birth at home for a first time mother. It was the tenth birth I attended. Happy Midwiferversary to me 💕

Did you know that Anthem BCBS is the only major insurance company that does not cover lactation care with IBCLCs? This needs to change! If your family has Anthem insurance and you have used IBCLC care in the past - or plan to do so in the future - your letters are needed to convince Anthem to cover lactation care!! All you need to do is write a quick email saying:

* You are an Anthem insured
* You have used and value IBCLC care in the past - or plan to do so in the future
* You demand that they contract with IBCLCS so that you can receive expert-level care for you and your baby!

Two IBCLCs are spearheading this effort and are meeting with Anthem execs soon. Send your email ASAP to: kristin@milkguide.com

This is for all the mothers who chose home birth after their last baby was born in the car on the way to the hospital or in the parking lot at the hospital or in their own driveway trying to get into the car to go to the hospital.
