Herbert Edward Allen

Herbert Edward Allen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, in Rock Island, Illinois. Born on March 5, 1939, in Moline, Illinois, Herbert led a life filled with warmth, laughter, and a passion for his work and family.

Herbert dedicated 29 years of his career to Lockheed Air Terminal, followed by 10 years at Yorkville Glass, showcasing his strong work ethic and commitment. He proudly served in the Air Force for four years at Edwards Air Force Base, where he worked on planes, solidifying his lifelong fascination with aviation.

An outgoing personality, Herbert cherished spending time with his family, especially during the holidays. He created beautiful memories, notably setting up his train collection beneath the Christmas tree, sharing his love for trains with those around him. His enthusiasm for airplanes and trains was evident, and he found joy in both watching them and discussing their intricacies.

Herbert’s commitment to family extended to his wife, Linda (Lessman) Allen, with whom he shared 53 wonderful years. He is survived by his children: Melody, Herbert R Allen, Edward Allen, and Linda (Tom) Stancato. Additionally, he took pride in his grandchildren: Angelo (Shannon) Minneci, Christopher Minneci, Michael Wankowski, Steven (McKenna) Wankowski, Sara Wankowski, Katie Stancato, Amber Allen, Hayden Allen, and Stephanie Crafton. His legacy also continues through his nephew and nieces: Cheryl (Carl) Brownell, Mary Morrison, Cara Allen, and Carrie Cahill.

Herbert's proudest accomplishments included participating in the Honor Flight in 2023, where he relished the experience, particularly enjoying a visit to a train museum that resonated with his past work in the Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward R. Allen, his mother, Pauline Allen, brothers Charles Allen and Richard Allen, sister-in-law Bernadette Allen, and son Donald Crafton. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

A visitation will be held on September 18, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Wendt Funeral Home, 1811 15th Street Place, Moline, Illinois. Following the visitation, a funeral service will take place at the same location starting at 6:00 PM. Herbert will be laid to rest at Rock Island National Cemetery on September 19, 2025, at 1:00 PM.

Herbert Edward Allen will be remembered for his joyful spirit, strong dedication to family, and profound love for his interests. As we gather to honor his life, we celebrate the many beautiful moments he shared with us. May he rest in peace.

Carol A. Galvin

Carol Ann Miles was born on June 15, 1939, in the vibrant city of Boston, MA, and she left this world on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Genesis MercyOne in Davenport, IA.

Carol was the cherished daughter of Frederick and Josephine Miles and grew up in the close-knit community of Winthrop, MA. After graduating from Winthrop High School, she pursued further education at the Katharine Gibbs School, which empowered women to excel in their careers. It was during her time working at Fort Banks Military Defense Post in Winthrop that she met the love of her life, Frank, and together they created a beautiful family in Rock Island, IL.

On October 25, 1958, she and Frank exchanged vows, marking the beginning of a profound partnership and a life dedicated to family. Carol’s true passion was nurturing her five children, but she also had an adventurous spirit. She enjoyed tennis and shopping and poured her heart into charitable work, reflecting her generous nature. As an active member of the Junior Board of Rock Island, the King's Daughters, and P.E.O. Sisterhood, Carol built lasting friendships and contributed selflessly to her community. Her competitive edge shone brightly in the multiple bridge clubs she participated in for over 60 years.

Carol’s greatest joy was found in her family. Together with her beloved husband, Frank, she created countless treasured memories with their children and grandchildren. She especially cherished the winter months at their second home in Sarasota, Florida, where she found peace in the sunshine and warmth.

She is lovingly remembered by her children: Michael (Kitka) Galvin, David Galvin, Stephanie (Dan) Oliver, John (Jennifer) Galvin, and Ted (Carmen) Galvin. Her memory will forever be etched in the hearts of her grandchildren: Jessie (Kelsey), Tatiana Galvin (Mike Pruitt), Taylor (Sam Camus) Galvin, Nikki, Ted (Katie), Becca Galvin, Kate Oliver, Samantha and Adam Galvin, and Phillip Lindberg; her brothers, Stephen Miles and Ron Miles; her three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews who adored her.

Carol was preceded in death by her loving husband, her parents, her grandson Jeffrey Oliver, and her siblings Al Miles, Fred Miles, and Leonore Quigley, as well as a sister-in-law, Marilyn Miles.

A graveside service to honor her remarkable life will be held at 9:00 AM on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Those who wish to join in the procession are kindly asked to gather at 8:30 AM at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, IL. A heartfelt funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM at Wendt Funeral Home, with a visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM that same day. A luncheon to celebrate Carol’s life and the wonderful memories shared will be held directly after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Junior Board of Rock Island or The Women's Choice Center, Bettendorf, IA.

We encourage everyone to share their stories and express their condolences on her Memory Page at wendtfuneralhome.com, as we come together to remember a truly extraordinary woman whose love and spirit touched the lives of so many.

Our Story

The Wendt family has been in the funeral business for six generations. They began in 1866 with J. Robert Earler, who came to Illinois from Germany around 1853. As an established cabinetmaker, he was called upon to provide wooden caskets for area farmers. When a person passed away in those days, the funeral was usually conducted in the home of the deceased, and the burial was in a plot on the family farm. Shortly after the Civil War, Mr. Earler opened a funeral parlor in Port Byron, IL, and Earler's son-in-law, August H. Wendt, took over the business from 1881 to 1920. At that time, Earl and Robert, the sons of August Wendt, ran the business until 1945. The current location of Wendt Funeral Home, a large Queen Anne Victorian house built in Moline in 1902, was purchased by Earl and Robert Wendt in 1929. Earl Wendt II handled the business with his brother, Richard, from 1945 until Earl's death in 1967. Then Earl III, along with his uncle, ran the home until Richard's retirement in 1985. Earl 'Buck' Wendt III now owns the funeral home, and operates it with his son, Earl Wendt IV, who joined him in 1977 and became a licensed director in 1983. Through the many generations, the Wendt family has always and will continue to provide the highest level of compassion, integrity and service to our families within our communities.
