James R. Christiansen

James R. Christiansen, a beloved member of the Moline community, passed away peacefully at home on October 25, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on April 9, 1939, in Moline, IL. Jim was known for his larger-than-life presence, becoming a cherished figure in the lives of many through his outgoing personality, generous spirit, and devotion to his family.

Jim was a proud graduate of Moline High School in 1957 and then pursued further education at Ferris State College in Big Rapids, MI, inspired by the path set by his father. He also attended the University of Mississippi, affectionately known as "Ole Miss", before returning home to help his father's growing business.

In his professional life, Jim owned and operated L.R. Christiansen Company, along with his brother Jon, where he made his mark as an industrial tool salesman. It was his ability to develop relationships with people that led to new opportunities for his entrepreneurial spirit to thrive. Jim was a true believer in investing in his local community and never giving up on anything he loved, and his community was one of those things. In the early 80s, when times were tough for our community, Jim and his brother spearheaded the redevelopment of the Farmall plant in Rock Island, after it closed down and thousands of jobs were lost in the area. They then moved on to redevelop several other local distressed properties. He was very proud to be part of the revitalization of several local vacant facilities that gave many new businesses a place to start, grow, and stay in our community.

Jim found joy in many activities outside of work, particularly his love for golf, playing gin rummy, and traveling. He especially loved watching football with his family and friends, sharing laughter, friendly debates, and lifelong traditions of friendly bets with his family on football game days. Jim and his wife, Pat, spent many years in Sarasota, Florida, where he provided a place for his family and grandchildren to visit for special vacation time and to unwind from the cold Midwestern winters.

He was the past president of Short Hills Country Club, where he was a member for 42 years. Golf was his passion sport, but it was more about the camaraderie and relationships that developed at Short Hills, both on and off the course. Short Hills was a "one stop shop," as he would say, a place to play golf, play cards, have a drink, do business, watch his children and a few of his grandchildren grow up there, and socialize with some great friends. Family meant everything to him, and he was never shy to let them know it.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia (Hillbert), whom he married on August 26, 1961. Together, they raised three children: Jill (David) Latting, Sue (Charlie) Hintz, and Scott (Kami) Christiansen. Jim took immense pride in his family, which includes grandchildren Casey (Jake) Hanzlik, Kayla (Jake) Scieszinski, Stefani Hintz, James ā€œJCā€ (Brittany) Hintz, Keaton (Chloe) Christiansen, and Kara Christiansen, as well as nine great-grandchildren, with the 10th on the way.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Roy and Harriett (Eckdahl) Christiansen, and his brother, Jon. His legacy will endure through the memories shared with his loved ones and the impact he made on the lives he touched.

A Celebration of Life will take place at Short Hills Country Club, East Moline, IL, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on November 1, 2025. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate the remarkable life of Jim Christiansen for this luncheon.

Memorials may be made to the Special Olympics of the Quad Cities, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Family and friends are invited to share memories and condolences on his Memory Page at www.wendtfuneralhome.com.

Shirley Sandler

Shirley Sandler, a beloved homemaker and cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully at her home in Moline, Illinois, on October 22, 2025. Born on January 21, 1939, in Luverne, Minnesota, to William and Pearl (Rasche) Schneekloth, Shirley's life was a testament to the virtues of love, care, and devotion.

A graduate of Moline High School, class of 1957, Shirley was known for her caring and loving personality. She radiated warmth and was always welcoming to those around her, forming deep connections with family and friends. Her spirit shone brightly, characterized by her fierce loyalty to her loved ones. Shirley married the love of her life, Lee Sandler, on January 9, 1959, in Moline. Together, they built a life filled with joy and laughter until Lee's passing.

Shirley was a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who found her greatest accomplishments in her family. Her daughter, Kim (Jim) Moran, along with her grandchildren—Jon (Keisha) Douglas, Matt (Vanessa) Douglas, Julie Moran, Eric (Kelly) Moran, and Brian (Kelly) Moran—represented the heart and soul of her life. She was blessed with seven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immeasurable pride and happiness. Shirley was a frequent attendee of their sports games and events, cheering them on with enthusiasm and showcasing the genuine support that was the hallmark of her role as a grandmother.

In addition to her family life, Shirley harbored a zest for adventure and enjoyed many hobbies. She loved watching scary movies and relished her memorable trip to Memphis to visit Elvis' estate. Las Vegas held a special place in her heart, as she made numerous trips there throughout her life. Yet, it was the simple expressions of love she shared with her family that defined her. Every day, and often multiple times throughout the day, Shirley would remind her loved ones how much she adored them.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Kim (Jim) Moran of Moline; her cherished grandchildren; and her seven great-grandchildren. Shirley also leaves behind her beloved sister, Connie Evans, as well as many nieces and nephews who will fondly remember her loving spirit.

She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Lee Sandler; her parents; her brother, Eugene Schneekloth; her sister-in-laws, Shirley Schneekloth and Mary Sandler, as well as her brother-in-laws, Duane Sandler and John Evans.

Shirley Sandler's visitation will be held on October 28, 2025, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm at Wendt Funeral Home, located at 1811 15th Street Place in Moline, Illinois. A funeral service will take place the following day, October 29, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am, also at Wendt Funeral Home. Shirley will be laid to rest at Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline, Illinois, following the service. Memorials may be made to the Moline Boosters Club.

In the hearts of her family and friends, the legacy of Shirley Sandler will live on—forever etched in their memories as a loving woman who made the world a brighter place through her kindness and devotion to family. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Family and friends are invited to share memories and condolences on her memory page at www.wendtfuneralhome.com.

Our Story

The Wendt family has been in the funeral business for six generations. They began in 1866 with J. Robert Earler, who came to Illinois from Germany around 1853. As an established cabinetmaker, he was called upon to provide wooden caskets for area farmers. When a person passed away in those days, the funeral was usually conducted in the home of the deceased, and the burial was in a plot on the family farm. Shortly after the Civil War, Mr. Earler opened a funeral parlor in Port Byron, IL, and Earler's son-in-law, August H. Wendt, took over the business from 1881 to 1920. At that time, Earl and Robert, the sons of August Wendt, ran the business until 1945. The current location of Wendt Funeral Home, a large Queen Anne Victorian house built in Moline in 1902, was purchased by Earl and Robert Wendt in 1929. Earl Wendt II handled the business with his brother, Richard, from 1945 until Earl's death in 1967. Then Earl III, along with his uncle, ran the home until Richard's retirement in 1985. Earl 'Buck' Wendt III now owns the funeral home, and operates it with his son, Earl Wendt IV, who joined him in 1977 and became a licensed director in 1983. Through the many generations, the Wendt family has always and will continue to provide the highest level of compassion, integrity and service to our families within our communities.
