In Honor of Veteran's Month let's answer a very common question...Why Plan Ahead as a Veteran?
At the time of loss, a veteran’s family will likely
want to gather together, offer support to one
another, remember their loved one, and honor
his or her legacy. That’s why a written plan for
family members is helpful, whether simple or
elaborate.
Keep in mind that planning ahead has
many benefits:
- Saves your family money
- Allows your family to spend more time
together
- Helps avoid arguments
- Gives you time to create a meaningful and
healing final tribute
- Provides peace of mind to you and your
loved ones
Your Burial Benefits as a Veteran:
Veterans may qualify for the following burial
benefits based on eligibility at no cost to your family:
- Burial Allowance - A designated dollar amount
that the VA pays toward a veteran’s funeral.
Interment at a National Cemetery - A plot,
opening and closing of the grave, and perpetual
care for a veteran, the veteran’s spouse, and dependents.
- Headstone or Grave Marker - A government issued headstone or medallion to mark the grave.
- Burial Flag with Military Funeral Honors - A flag
is provided to drape the casket or urn and given
to the next of kin. Military honors includes
folding and presenting the United States burial
flag and the playing of Taps.
- Presidential Memorial Certificate - An engraved
certificate, signed by the current President.
Be sure to check with your local Veterans Service
Officer to verify your eligibility for these benefits.
