DEPRESSION – Don’t Blame It Totally On COVID!

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 280 million people worldwide have depression. It is the #1 disability in the world.

Depression can affect children, teens, young people, adults, senior citizens, males, females, Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, churchgoers, non-believers, Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, Pentecostals, Evangelicals, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, agnostics, atheists…

According to Dr. Gregory Jantz, founder of The Center A Place of HOPE, the following are factors that can lead to Depression:

1. Emotions 4. Nutrition
2. Unforgiveness 5. Physical
3. Technology 6. Sleep Habits

Let’s look at ways to overcome and heal from the Emotion & Unforgiveness factors that can lead to Depression.

 Schedule an appointment and talk to your primary doctor.
 Avoid isolating yourself. Try to involve yourself in group activities.
 Emotions are God-given. Learn how to control your emotions.
 Seek individual therapy with a professional and licensed therapist to help you acknowledge and overcome unresolved hurt and anger.
 Secrets are emotionally toxic. With the help of a professional licensed therapist, discuss any past trauma you have experienced.
 Release offenses and grudges. Learn how to forgive others as well as yourself.
 Let go of faulty thinking and surround yourself with positive affirmations. I am loveable. I am enough. I deserve respect.
 Create boundaries to maintain your peace of mind. Choose to be happy. Choose not to react to negative comments or actions. However, when necessary, respond appropriately.
 Journal – Walk – Exercise – Pray – Meditate
 If needed, take antidepressants prescribed by your doctor. (It’s really OK! Taking an antidepressant prescribed by your doctor is the same as taking medicine for high blood pressure, diabetes, or any other medical condition.

QUESTION

How do you think “Emotions” and “Unforgiveness” can lead to depression?

If you feel that you are suicidal or may harm yourself or others, please call 988 immediately! There is HOPE!

Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.)

Have you ever noticed how different you feel on a warm and sunny day as compared to a dark and gloomy day? S.A.D., (an appropriate acronym), is a form of depression usually associated with the winter season. It is the result of continued lack of sunlight and vitamin D. Some people refer to it as the winter blues.

Just as long, warm, and sunny days can improve moods, long, cold, and gloomy days can negatively impact moods.

Symptoms of S.A.D. can include:

Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or irritability which occurs daily for much of the day for a period of two consecutive weeks or more.

Fatigue and restlessness which disrupts concentration.

Changes in appetite causing weight loss or gain.

Disruptive sleep: Inability to fall asleep, inability to stay asleep, or sleeping too much.

Thoughts of harming oneself and/or thoughts of su***de.

If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, see a medical professional!

Medical Treatment for S.A.D. can include:

Vitamin D supplements.

Light Therapy Lamps or Boxes

Medication

Referral to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Self-Help Treatments for S.A.D. can include:

Exercise regularly.

Take a brisk walk outside and breathe in fresh air or walk inside. Just get moving!

Open curtains and/or blinds of your residence. Let the sunlight in!

Do not isolate yourself! Get out and interact with others; socialize!

Avoid too many carbs like pasta, breads, and pies, and eat plenty of protein-rich foods like fruits and vegetables. Carbs spike glucose levels which will then drop suddenly.

If you feel that you are suicidal or may harm someone, please contact 800-273-8255 immediately.

Peace & Blessings!

THOUGHTS - EMOTIONS - NERVES are controlled by our central nervous system comprised of our brain and spinal cord. MENTAL ILLNESS is a medical term for a health issue of the brain which results in conditions that affect our THINKING, our FEELINGS, our MOODS, our BEHAVIOR, and our RELATIONSHIPS with others.

Mental Illness does not discriminate by S*x - Age - Race - Culture or Religious Views.

Mental Illness is NOT a weakness and is NOT a condition to be ashamed of.

Mental Illness is NOT a sin.

Mental Illness CAN be treated and controlled.

See your primary care physician for a referral to a specialist.

DEPRESSION…a topic that many feel is a personal “hush-hush” term. It is a topic, which, when discussed, is often about someone else, and rarely discussed from a personal point of view, from personal experience. For some, it is viewed spiritually as an attack of the enemy. Is it? After all, the Bible says in Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee…”

Let’s chat about depression. It appears this term, this condition, this illness has become a more common term as several public figures such as Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams, Wayne Brady, and Dwayne Johnson, to name a few, have begun to openly discuss their battles with it. It makes sense, one would think, that these people, who are again, public figures, would experience depression because of constant public scrutiny and ongoing stress. However, depression can affect anyone; it has no respect of persons. It does not matter whether you are rich or poor, young, or old, employed, or unemployed, Black, or White, religious or atheist, anyone can be affected by depression. Like headaches, poor circulation, digestive problems, muscle pain, asthma, irregular heartbeats, kidney problems, etc., depression is an illness. An illness that no one should be ashamed of!

Have you ever heard the term, “smiling depression”? This term describes persons who are suffering from depression but appear to be normal. They are laughing and functioning as if they do not have a care in the world, but they are broken inside. They tend to hide their true emotions because they do not want to appear to be weak; they do not want to become a burden to others. What would people think if they knew a family member or a co-worker was depressed? What if a choir member, usher board member, teacher, or preacher in the church were to admit that they were depressed? How would you react? Would you look at these depressed persons differently? Well for the record, very prominent people in the Bible like Job, Elijah, David, Naomi, and Ruth experienced depression but found strength and hope in God.

Depression is more than sadness; it is not a mood one can just snap out of on their own. The cause of depression can be a myriad of life issues like loneliness or isolation, intense ongoing stress, physical and/or verbal abuse. Depression could be caused by medical and biological factors like hormonal imbalances, thyroid abnormalities, lack of Vitamin D, exposure to black mold, prescription drugs, and yes, spiritual problems like unconfessed sin and unresolved anger.

Know this, whatever the cause of one’s depression, it must be properly treated to be controlled or resolved.

There are trained psychologists, counselors, coaches, therapists, and psychiatrists who are skilled to care for emotional and mentally ill conditions. You are important! It is time to take care of YOU! Please, take that first step toward your healing by contacting your primary care doctor, who can refer you to the appropriate counselor. You may also send me a message and I will give you referrals from my resources. If you feel that you are suicidal or may harm someone, please contact 800-273-8255 immediately. There IS hope and help for you!

If you know of someone who would benefit from this blog, please, please share it!! Also, I want to hear from you! Have you personally experienced or are currently experiencing depression? How did you/are you managing it? Your response is confidential. Please let me know if you would like me to share your experience with others.

Peace & God Bless!

Welcome to Phase 1 of Guidance Toward Healing! This page is a platform designed to tear down false thoughts, myths, and stigmas, especially within our Black culture, regarding mental and emotional illness, through education. Culturally, many within the Black community, silently suffers through mental and emotional matters. But ignoring it doesn’t make it go away. Smiling despite the pain doesn’t address the problem. Culturally, the Black community looks to the church for advice and counsel, but often, despite good intentions, the condition is not adequately addressed. The scripture says in Psalm 147:3, “He, (God), heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds”. It is my firm belief that God has called we, His people, to be a channel of His healing for others. Likewise, I am convinced that it is essential to mental and emotional health, that the church, as a whole, work hand-in-hand with mental health professionals, to facilitate much needed healing.
