To ensure a safe and happy Thanksgiving, planning ahead and following key safety guidelines for travel, at-home hosting, and general well-being is crucial.

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, so preparation is key.
Plan Ahead: Check weather and traffic conditions for your route before departing and consider leaving during off-peak times (e.g., early morning on Wednesday or on Thanksgiving Day itself).
Vehicle Preparation: Ensure your car is in good working order by checking tire pressure, fluid levels, lights, and brakes to avoid unexpected breakdowns.
Prioritize Safety While Driving: Always wear your seat belt, obey speed limits, and avoid distractions like cell phones. Never drive impaired or fatigued; use a designated driver or pull over to rest if needed.
Pack an Emergency Kit: Carry essentials such as a first-aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, blankets, water, and non-perishable snacks.
Stay Connected: Share your travel itinerary and expected arrival time with a friend or family member.
For Air Travel: Arrive at the airport early, be aware of TSA guidelines, and consider packing essential medications and valuables in your carry-on luggage.

Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage?

Are you confused about all the benefits that the insurance industry wants to give youโ€”for free?

There is an old saying that rings true โ€œThere is no free lunch.โ€ Original Medicare is a longstanding and well-beloved healthcare plan โ€“ funded by you and your employer for most of your life. Although there has been a lot of expensive advertising for the insurance product called Medicare Advantage, we encourage you to consider the benefits of Original/Traditional Medicare.

We are proud to offer local healthcare services for those on Original Medicare. Most of the Medicare Advantage programs will force you to some big city for your healthcare. To review a helpful video and to learn more about your choice of healthcare for those over 65 years old, go to www.choosingmedicare.org or call 432-943-2511 ext. 176.

Did you know that Thanksgiving is the number one day of the year for home cooking fires in the U.S.? According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking accounts for 80% of Thanksgiving Day home fires and 40% of related injuries.

We want everyone to have a happy โ”€ and safe โ”€ Thanksgiving and offers ten steps everyone can follow as they prepare their Thanksgiving feast.

Stay in the kitchen while using the stovetop or oven to keep an eye on things.
If you must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove or oven.
Use a timer to remind yourself that the stove or oven is on.
Avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
Keep kids and pets at least three feet away from cooking areas.
Keep anything that can catch fire โ”€ potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging and towels or curtains โ”€ away from your stove top and oven or any other appliance that generates heat.
Clean cooking surfaces regularly to prevent grease buildup.
Consider purchasing a fire extinguisher to keep in your kitchen.
Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving home to make sure stoves, ovens and small appliances are turned off.
Frying your turkey this year? Never use a fryer near your house or other structure. Place the fryer on a flat, even surface. Never fry a turkey thatโ€™s not fully thawed.

Follow these safety tips and visit redcross.org/fire for more information, including a fire escape plan to practice with your family.

A little caffeine is no big deal, but don't overdo it! It could put stress on your heart.

In moderate doses caffeine has mainly positive effects for most people. But it increases production of cortisol, which can lead to health problems including anxiety, weight gain and heart disease.

Today is National Rural Health Day, and earlier this week our very own Dr. Daye was recognized by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at the Permian Basin and Permian Basin AHEC with the Rural Health Care Provider Pioneer award for his work with TTUHSC surgical residents and commitment to rural medicine and community health.
๐Ÿ†๐Ÿฉบโญ๏ธ
The award was given in honor of Dr. Charles Sponsel, a longtime community physician in Stanton who devoted his career to advancing geriatric and rural medicine. His leadership at TTUHSC and his dedication to developing rural family medicine residency programs continue to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals across West Texas - and we are proud to continue that legacy with our organization!!
