Minor cuts and scrapes are a common part of life. They can happen to anyone, at any time. But there are a few simple steps you can take to treat a minor cut or scrape and prevent infection.
Clean the wound. Use soap and water to clean the wound thoroughly. This will help to remove dirt and bacteria.
2. Stop the bleeding. If the wound is bleeding, apply pressure to it with a clean cloth or bandage. Hold the pressure for at least 5 minutes.
3. Apply an antibiotic ointment. Once the bleeding has stopped, apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment to the wound. This will help to prevent infection.
4. Cover the wound. Cover the wound with a bandage to protect it from dirt and bacteria.
5. Know when to seek medical care. If the wound is deep, will not stop bleeding, shows signs of infection, or if you are unsure how serious it may be, contact your healthcare provider.
Remember, the Ward Memorial Hospital Emergency Department is open 24/7.
