The Jello Man
My office manager Bonnie and I were doing a chair massage event at Lee’s Summit North High school today. I enjoy these events because they allow us to get out into the community and share our gifts and message of health. Bonnie is a retired (but still licensed) massage therapist, and has been so kind as to help me with community outreach. Thank you Bonnie! Between massages she and I have the opportunity to talk about our experiences in the healing arts. She ran a successful business in Belton and blessed many souls with her services and healing hands.
We got to talking about past clients and patients we have helped over the years. We discussed how some people would come in with muscles tight as ropes and trigger points as hard as golf balls. We discussed how people hold stress in their bodies and how as healers it is important for us not to take that stress into our own bodies. She told me about a client of hers that said he was very stressed but his body was soft like jello to the touch. I suggested he might keep his stress in his mind or a visceral organ, and we agreed the muscles were a better place to store it.
Stress is a tricky partner in life. A little stress can motivate us to reach goals and accomplish tasks. Sustained stress unmanaged can lead to illness and even death. It’s important for us to realize when we are in a constant state of stress. For some of us our bodies will give us clues: pains in our necks, back, headaches, or fatigue. For others, symptoms may be more severe and show up when it’s almost too late i.e. heart attack.
This week take a moment to do a stress inventory. Try to be aware of the signs coming from your body. Are your shoulders hiked up close to your ears at the end of your work day? Are you having multiple headaches per week? Are you constantly feeling tired even though you are getting enough sleep?
If you are aware of how your body feels you are one step closer to health than many people. Some don’t gain body awareness until they are seriously ill.
This week listen to your body, move your body, make it sweat, put your bare feet in cool grass, go outside and take a walk, laugh, cry, give someone a hug, breathe….
Take care of your body, if you need help we are here for you with chiropractic and massage therapy. We are happy to give you tips to help manage your stress and help improve the quality and quantity of your life.
Have a great week. We are here for you in love and service.
Sincerely,
Dr. Zachary Jamesson
