The American Nurses Association (ANA) has raised significant concerns about proposed federal loan policy changes that exclude nursing from being classified as a “professional degree” program.

This shift would drastically reduce nurses’ access to federal loan eligibility—threatening efforts to strengthen the U.S. nursing workforce at a time of historic shortages. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), especially in rural and underserved areas, are essential to maintaining access to high-quality care.

Nursing must be recognized as the essential profession it is.

WNA joins ANA in urging the Department of Education to revise this definition and protect access to graduate nursing education.
