We are focused on placing you on a healing path. We will thoughtfully listen to you, encouraging you to share and talk about your loved one.
Throughout our time with you and your family, we will be a guiding hand helping you make the right choices. The James O’Donnell Funeral Home has been serving Monroe City and the surrounding communities for over 100 years, dating back to 1895 from its Hannibal location. In 2018 the James O’Donnell Funeral Home opened the James O’Donnell Life Celebration Home of Monroe City when it acquired the former Yager-Kendrick Funeral Home. New renovations and furnishings have increased the comforts of this modern facility for the families of Monroe City. Jimmy O’Donnell and his fellow directors are the only Life Celebration Home in the area. This means that our funeral directors are specially trained to co-create with families a memorable, healing experience that truly remembers a life lived. Together with the families we serve we create a unique experience that celebrates the path of our loved one’s life and shares all that is special.

Lifelong Farmer, Dancing, Family and Friends!
Yesterday, Dwight Wayne Shuck was honored at his Life Celebration. Dwight was a lifelong farmer, sold crop insurance and heavy machine operator. He loved to dance and often said, "If I hear music playing, I gotta dance". Dwight also enjoyed fishing and c**n hunting, cherished his toy tractors and guns. But, most of all Dwight enjoyed his time with family and friends. Gatherings at Meyer Implement for coffee with his buddies was a special time to him. He watched Cardinal baseball and old westerns. Bowling, especially when throwing strikes, and savoring a classic Crown Royal. Dwight was a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Wi******ers, History Buff and a Good Cup of Coffee!
Saturday, we honored Thomas “Tommy” White at his Life Celebration. Tommy was a man of great character and work ethic. He was a true Civil War and WWII history buff. His favorite author was Louis L'Amour. He was an avid Wi******er gun collector. Tommy would never turn down chocolate or a chance to share a cup of coffee. Tommy loved to work with his hands, crafting something in his workshop or working out in the yard. His cowboy boots were a testament to his love for the country lifestyle, and he listened to the music of Dolly Parton and Conway Twitty. Tommy will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Scratch Off Lottery Tickets. Delicious Desserts and Diet Pepsi!
Yesterday we celebrated the life of Hazel Juanita Dickerson at her Life Celebration. Hazel never met a stranger and could light up any room. She enjoyed scratching lottery tickets. She was known for her peach cobbler and her Texas sheet cake. She also enjoyed a can of Olde English or Diet Pepsi. Hazel was a fan of the Chip and Dale dancers, soap operas, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, In the Heat of the Night, and Dirty Dancing. She listened to the music of Marvin Gaye, Keith Sweat, and Betty Ray. Hazel will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire laughter and love in the hearts of those she touched.

The O’Donnell family has had the honor of serving the area since 1895. With the recent addition of the James O’Donnell Life Celebration Home, they are able to assist area families who have experienced a loss with a facility in Monroe City.
During the COVID 19 Crisis:
For the family…call us. We know what to do. We will take care of your loved one and will meet with you via telephone, email and in person as the need arises. We will help you plan services. You can have a visitation and a funeral. Any public notices will say that funeral services are private. You will have the ability to invite people to be present with you; however, at no time can more than twenty-five people gather at one time. We will plan no more than one service per day in our facility to ensure that exposure to others is minimized. As new information becomes available protocols may change.
For everybody else…telephone your family member or friend who has suffered a loss so that they know that they are not alone. Offer words of love and support and a virtual hug…drop something delicious by the house and have a very brief visit…leave a condolence on the funeral home website…make a donation to the suggested charity…send a card or flowers or have a Mass said…remain in touch…and above all else…say prayers for the deceased and their family. These gifts of sympathy and charity are beyond measure and will give the family the courage they need to face a new day.
I have seen countless times when the good people of Monroe City and the surrounding
communities have rallied together and lifted broken hearts and held them close and helped
to heal them. No doubt, that will continue.
