Meditation

As I've mentioned before, I'd like to stress the importance of reaching a calm and relaxed state, and I want to introduce a valuable tool for achieving that โ€“ meditation. Meditation has been around for thousands of years and has been extensively studied for its numerous benefits on both the mind and body. When you meditate, you learn to quiet your thoughts and emotions, helping you become more present in your daily life. Beyond this mental clarity, meditation also offers tangible physical benefits. It teaches you to slow down and deepen your breath, which has a positive impact on your body. This improved breathing allows your body to take in more oxygen, promoting better cardiovascular health and aiding in post-exercise recovery.

Dedicating just 10 minutes a day to the simple practice of observing your breath and sitting in silence can work wonders for your mental and physical well-being. To get started, you can find a 10-minute guided meditation on YouTube. Give it a try, and you may be pleasantly surprised by the positive changes in how you feel!

Self Massage Techniques

Although it's most beneficial to consult a professional for your soft tissue needs, there are effective DIY methods for achieving quick relief. Some popular self-care techniques for loosening soft tissue include foam rolling, using lacrosse balls, and utilizing various devices like psorite and body tempering rollers. These approaches can swiftly improve your range of motion, whether it's before a workout or to kickstart your day with increased mobility.

When using these methods, it's essential to apply the same principles employed by many massage therapists in their practice. First, pinpoint a tender area, then apply pressure until your pain level registers around a 7/10, and most importantly, BE PATIENT. Typically, it takes at least 90 seconds of sustained pressure for that 7/10 pain to begin to subside. During this time, sit with the discomfort, take slow breaths, and relax until you feel the area responding.

You can complement your DIY soft tissue work by incorporating stretches before and/or after the process, maximizing the effectiveness and longevity of the results. However, stretching offers numerous benefits, and for athletes, one of the most important benefits is that tight muscles can't contract fully. This means that when your muscles, like your biceps, feel tight, you're not training them optimally, and this limits muscle growth.

Ideally, your muscles should feel relaxed when not in use, so they can contract effectively when you exercise. Stretching regularly can improve your joint health, enhance your workout performance, and boost your overall mood and well-being.
