What started as one ice cream cart has turned into a beloved night shift tradition! Our departments are creating their own themed carts with fiesta snacks, dirty sodas, baby shower treats, and more. SSM Health Monroe Hospital and Blackhawk Technical College are making nursing education more accessible right here in Monroe!

In our new cohort, SSM Health employees can now attend BTC classes virtually from Monroe and complete clinicals at our hospital taught by our own experienced RNs. This program is already changing lives, helping 3 local staff become nurses and a second group of 7 starts in January 2026! A big win for rural healthcare, career growth, and our community.

At 60 years old, Tracy Freiberg felt healthy. She had no symptoms that raised red flags - just a routine annual checkup scheduled with her physician. That visit, however, would set in motion a whirlwind of events that ultimately saved her life.

Tracy’s doctor noted a slight murmur during her exam and recommended an echocardiogram. She quickly learned that she needed to see a cardiologist. The following week, Tracy was diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis caused by a congenital bicuspid valve, and earlier this summer, she underwent open-heart surgery.

Her recovery was remarkably smooth. Tracy returned home after three nights in the hospital and started long-term recovery with a cardiac rehabilitation routine.

“SSM Health did a fantastic job keeping my family up to date, and that personal touch meant so much to them,” Tracy said. “Everybody was there when you needed them.”
