Winter weather is forecasted to move in tomorrow afternoon, which means there is still time to prepare. Planning ahead can help reduce stress and keep everyone safe, especially for families of children with special needs.

Here are a few helpful tips to prepare!

A little preparation can go a long way in helping kids feel safe and supported during unexpected weather changes, and keep parent's feeling confident in the days to come.

Ice storms can bring sudden changes like loud weather, power outages, and disrupted routines. For autistic children, these unexpected moments can feel scary or overwhelming. We are sharing this social story to help parents explain what might happen during an power outage in a simple, reassuring, and child centered way.

How to Use This Social Story With Your Child:
🩵Read the social story when your child is calm, not during the outage itself if possible.
🩵 Sit with your child and read it together, using a slow and reassuring voice.
🩵 Pause to name feelings if your child relates, such as feeling scared or worried.
🩵 Reassure them that a parent or trusted adult will keep them safe.
🩵 Revisit the story more than once so it feels familiar.

It is okay if your child does not respond or engage right away. Listening is enough!
Social stories are meant to build understanding and comfort over time. Even brief exposure can help children feel more prepared for changes.

Check this out!
The Arc’s travel initiative, Wings for Autism / Wings for All, is designed to make air travel more accessible and comfortable for individuals with autism and other intellectual or developmental disabilities. The program helps reduce stress and uncertainty by offering families a simulated airport experience: complete with check-in, security, waiting areas, and boarding practice, so travelers and their loved ones can build confidence before flying for real.

It also gives airline, TSA, and airport staff a chance to learn how to better support neurodiverse travelers. The goal is to open up opportunities for connection, independence, and community participation through inclusive travel experiences.

This only happens a few times a year, but it worth planning for! Check out more on their website, thearc.org!

Our newest blog entry is now live, and shares a beautiful story about one of our RBTs first experience with being the primary therapist to a non-verbal/verbal learner.

Our Substack is a space for sharing real stories, education, and insight from inside the world of pediatric therapy and ABA. It highlights the human side of the work, the learning moments, the challenges, and the wins that happen every day with children, families, and clinicians.

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his words, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”

This quote reminds us that meaningful change does not only come from grand gestures, but comes from steady choices every day. Dr. King emphasized the power of everyday actions, consistency, and commitment. Small, intentional efforts, when done with purpose, create lasting impact in communities and society as a whole.

In our field, this philosophy shows up every day. Progress is built through small steps taken with care. A new skill practiced, a transition supported, a moment of communication strengthened. These small, thoughtful moves forward are what truly create growth and lasting change over time, and make a great impact on great kids.

Thank you to all of our team, parents, and kiddos for those small and great things we have the honor of being a witness of. 🩵

Our website now features an online Autism Screener developed for ages 16 to 48 months! The Autism Screener is a brief, 20-question developmental screener that helps identify behaviors that may indicate the need for further evaluation. While it is not a diagnostic tool, many pediatricians use it to guide next steps and support conversations with your child’s healthcare provider!

You can find it right on our website under "For Parents - Autism Screener", or via this link! https://www.compleatkidz.com/autism-screening-tool/
