Women almost always seem surprised when I tell them the most common area for melanoma to develop in women is the calf.
For men, melanoma favors the trunk.

Check your skin. Have regular skin checks.

Some skin cancer prevention tips:

Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.

Don’t get sunburned.

Avoid tanning and never use UV tanning beds.

Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or excessive sweating.

Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.

Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.

See a dermatology specialist at least once a year for a professional skin exam.

We pride ourself on offering timely appointments to patients in need of immediate attention. If you’re worried about a changing mole, are experiencing a serious or painful rash, or have some other urgent need- we promise to see you within a week of your call, sometimes even on the same day.
Two Pittsburgh area locations:

The average wait for a dermatologist appointment nationally is 32 days. In D.C., the average is 20 days. News4's Doreen Gentzler tells you what you can do to get seen sooner.

Spot the spot

Self skin exams and exams by dermatology providers are the best way to prevent death from melanoma.
Things to be aware of:

-New or changing mole
-An “ugly duckling,” a mole that looks different than your others
-A mole that violates the ABCDEs:
*Asymmetry
*Border that is irregular
*Color: that is changing or varied
*Diameter: larger than an eraser on a pencil
*Evolving: flat and then raises, brown and then black, smooth and then rough, etc.

May is melanoma awareness month. Throughout the month, I’ll be posting educational material about melanoma.

The best treatment for melanoma is early detection. Yearly skin cancer screenings by a dermatology specialist are the best way to prevent, detect, and treat melanoma.

Call to schedule your total body skin cancer screening, with me, at either of our Pittsburgh locations.

We’re passionate about skincare!
Although I enjoy taking care of all concerns related to the hair, skin, or nail, over the past eight years I have focused much of my practice on the prevention, detection, and surgical treatment of skin cancer.
Yearly skin checks are a great way to keep your skin healthy.
Call to schedule your yearly skin exam with me!

Summer is here. Enjoy the beautiful, sunny weather! Remember to wear sunscreen. Sunscreen should be at least SPF 30 and should be reapplied every two hours (more frequently if swimming or sweating). For most, approximately one shot glass of sunscreen is required to do the job. Be sure to select sunscreens that are broad spectrum and preferably contain titanium or zinc. As always, it’s a good idea to have a skin cancer screening yearly.

One of the most important things that we as dermatology PAs can do is to prevent disease through education. One of the cornerstones of our profession is our excellent ability to provide education by spending quality time with our patients. May is melanoma awareness month; let’s do our best to spread the word about the dangers of tanning, the need for spf, and the need for regular skin cancer screenings by a dermatology provider.
