I have been a lifelong supporter and advocate of the circular economy long before it was a buzzword. I have spent my life curating unique, expressive wardrobes at fractions of the retail price, finding beauty in pieces others overlooked and turning them into something entirely my own.
As a mother of three growing boys, I’ve learned that purchasing new simply because it’s new is often unnecessary. There is an exhilarating thrill in the hunt... finding perfectly good, quality garments that already exist and giving them a second life. It saves money, yes. But more importantly, it teaches my children discernment, creativity, and the value of stewardship over consumption. A wardrobe built this way is unique, intentional, and never dictated by fleeting trends.
The fashion industry generates an estimated 92 million tons of textile waste globally every year, with roughly 11–17 million tons entering U.S. landfills annually. The average American throws away about 81 pounds of clothing per year. Fast fashion thrives on influencing consumers to chase trends, discard perfectly wearable pieces, and repeat the cycle. I choose not to participate in that rhythm. Reclaimed Bohemia exists as a quiet resistance, rescuing quality garments from landfills and transforming them into wearable art.
Living off-grid in our forest cabin has deepened my appreciation for natural fibers. Synthetic fabrics...often petroleum-based like polyester and nylon — shed microplastics into our waterways, persist in landfills for decades, and can off-gas chemicals. In contrast, natural fibers breathe, biodegrade, and feel grounded against the skin. When you live close to the land, you begin to care deeply about what touches your body and what returns to the earth.
Flannel itself is timeless. Originating in Wales as early as the 17th century, flannel has been in steady circulation for over 300 years. It has clothed farmers, lumberjacks, artists, grunge musicians, and homesteaders alike. Durable. Comfortable. Classic. Most traditional flannels are 100% cotton, soft, breathable, and built to last. Since moving to our homestead, flannels have replaced the questionable fabrics that once filled my closet. They are practical, warm, and honest.
Reclaimed Bohemia is my artistic nod to this movement. Quality reclaimed flannels adorned with mostly original designs, hand-applied using waterproof fabric paint through my signature henna cone technique. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, carrying both history and intention. No two are ever the same.
I do my best to stock sizes XS–3X. Smaller and extended sizes can be more challenging to source in reclaimed pieces, but I am always on the lookout — often pulling from the men’s section because, let’s be honest, a men’s cut flannel is usually far more comfortable anyway!!
Shirts range from $25–$45 depending on design just like my henna prices. And yes… denim may be joining the collection soon. Because… denim, baby!!!
All proceeds from Reclaimed Bohemia go directly into the continued growth and betterment of our homestead, Whispering Oaks — supporting our off-grid life, land stewardship, and the intentional raising of our family close to the earth. When you purchase a piece, you are not only investing in wearable art amd a local artist — you are investing in soil, sustainability, and a slower, more thoughtful way of living.
