🏔️ Calling all mountain athletes! Exciting research update on spleen response at high altitude:

🔬 **Study Objective:** Investigating spleen volume changes during hyperoxic breathing at altitude.

🔍 **Key Findings:**
1. Sherpa have larger spleens at rest than lowlanders.
2. Lowlanders experience spleen size increase during hyperoxia, while Sherpa show no change.
3. Sherpa's steady spleen size during hyperoxic breathing suggests a unique adaptation to altitude-related hypoxia.

💡 **Implications:**
- Sherpa's distinct spleen response may enhance their ability to handle physical stress in the mountains.
- For mountain athletes, understanding these physiological nuances could revolutionize high-altitude training strategies.

Exciting findings from a recent study on altered states of consciousness (ASCs) and breathwork! Researchers explored the potential of circular breathwork as a non-pharmacological alternative for inducing ASCs, akin to those experienced with psychedelic therapy.

Key takeaway: Deliberate hyperventilation leading to a reduction in CO2 saturation plays a crucial role in catalyzing ASCs during breathwork sessions. 😤

What's fascinating? ASCs induced by breathwork showed comparable benefits to those from psychedelics, including improved well-being and reduced depressive symptoms. 💊🍄

In high-altitude environments, mountain athletes may experience increased respiratory water loss due to the dry air and decreased humidity levels. Mouth breathing exacerbates this dehydration process, leading to further water loss and potential performance detriments in mountain pursuits. Therefore, adopting nasal breathing techniques can help mitigate dehydration and optimize performance in these challenging conditions.

A research study examining respiratory water loss during nasal and oral expiration in healthy individuals demonstrated a remarkable 42% decrease in water loss with nasal expiration. Interestingly, even though decongestion of the nasal mucosa led to an increase in nasal cross-sectional area, it did not influence water loss. These findings suggest that the heightened water and energy loss associated with oral breathing could potentially exacerbate symptoms in patients with nasal obstruction (Svensson, Olin, & Hellgren, 2006).

At Mountain Wellness, we've developed the Closed Balanced System methodology, which focuses on nasal breathing for proper breathing mechanics, along with optimizing three key biomarkers for optimal respiratory performance: force rate, CO2 tolerance, and lung capacity. Nasal breathing during exercise, despite being perceived as odd and impractical, has been known since the late 1970s to benefit those with bronchoconstriction, yet concerns about limiting peak performance potential have led to limited exploration of its potential benefits. However, there's increasing awareness, especially through internet dissemination, of its advantages. Scientific evidence now supports the possibility of adapting to nasal breathing during exercise, potentially leading to improved physiological economy and performance. Improved ventilatory efficiency and economy can enhance performance by allowing individuals to perform tasks using less energy, thus increasing work rates for the same overall energy output. Understanding and adapting to nasal breathing may have wide-ranging benefits, including improved functional movement ability, training consistency, relaxation during exercise, oxygen carrying capacity, simulated altitude training, altitude ascension tolerance, aerobic threshold training, glycogen sparing, and exercise dehydration management. Learn how to train nasal breathing in the Mountain Wellness®️ Performance Breath Work online course - link in profile. 🏔️
