Care looks different for everyone but it always starts with showing up for yourself and your family.

In recognition of Black Maternal Health Week, the City of East Orange WIC Program, in partnership with Donia Studio, invites parents and caregivers to The Art of Care — a hands-on experience centered on wellness, creativity, and connection.

Join us for an afternoon that includes:
• A guided painting session
• A maternal health nutrition talk led by a WIC nutritionist
• Breastfeeding education and support
• Yoga and stretching for relaxation and balance

This is a space to learn, create, and reconnect with what care truly looks like in your everyday life.

Why is Black Maternal Health Week important?

Better question is why isn’t it? 💜

Black women are dying 3-4x more than white women during childbirth and postpartum… regardless of education. Regardless of income. Regardless of how “prepared” they are.

They are being sent home while in pain. While something feels wrong. While their bodies are screaming that something isn’t right and still not being believed.

And so many Black women don’t even know they have the right to advocate for themselves and their babies in those moments.

This isn’t just a statistic. This is somebody’s mother. Sister. Friend.

So do you see now why it matters?

Not every birth starts with candles and ends in a tub…
some start with bright lights, a surgical team, and a different kind of strength.

And let’s be clear...
a cesarean is not the “easy way out.”

It’s courage.
It’s surrender.
It’s decision-making in real time.
It’s a mother doing whatever it takes to bring her baby earthside safely.

As a doula, I support ALL births.
Yes…even in the OR 🤍

Because whether baby comes through the va**na or through an incision…
you still labored. you still birthed. you still became a mother.

This month, we honor cesarean mamas.
Planned. Unplanned. Emergency. Healing.
