Amanda Walstedt, LPC, LCADC, Director of our Assisted Outpatient Program (Essex), and Rachel Haley, LPC, Director of Criminal Justice Reform (Essex) were honored to present at this year’s American Counseling Association Annual Conference.

In their breakout session, they highlighted our court-involved programs focused on restoring communities and the power of diverting individuals away from the criminal justice system.

They also had the opportunity to reflect on the broader importance of mental health and how we care for those navigating mental illness in our society.

We’re grateful to be in community with professionals committed to growth, equity, and meaningful change.

We were truly honored to receive a meaningful gift from our veteran support group, a handcrafted wooden American flag, given in appreciation of having a space to come together and a place they can call home at MHA.

We also had the privilege of witnessing our veterans carefully fold an American flag that will be preserved in a commemorative frame. This flag carries special historical significance, having been flown over the United States Capitol in recognition of Prospect House, MHA’s day program, at the request of the Honorable Peter W. Rodino Jr.

This gesture means more than words can express, and we’re so grateful to our veteran community for their continued support.

Counseling Awareness Month is a reminder that you don’t have to carry everything on your own.

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Whether you’re starting your journey or continuing it, support is always within reach.

CW: sexual assault, sexual abuse

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month ( ). Sexual violence is a deeply traumatic experience, and trauma has a long-lasting effect on our mental health. People who have been abused are at risk for developing depression, PTSD, substance use disorders, anxiety, and eating disorders.

If you have experienced sexual violence, remember that abuse is never your fault. Recovering from abuse is difficult, and the process is nonlinear, but it IS possible. If you’re a survivor, these messages are for you. 🩵

The Hope One initiative celebrated nine years of outreach at the Hope One Symposium on April 8, continuing its powerful impact by bringing support directly into the community and helping save lives through education, recovery connections, and harm reduction.

MHA was proud to be represented at this year’s symposium through our Substance Use Recovery and Empowerment (SURE) program and the ARRIVE Together program, connecting individuals and families to critical substance use and mental health resources.

Together, we remain committed to meeting people where they are, breaking down barriers to care, and ensuring that support is always within reach.

This , we’re reminding everyone: mental health is health.

Prioritizing your mind is just as important as caring for your body.

Today is a reminder to slow down, breathe, and give yourself the care you deserve.

Assemblywoman Sweeney, a registered dietitian, is a healthcare professional well versed in issues important to mental health and substance use recovery.

The engaging discussion focused on how we can better support access to care, strengthen community-based services, and improve the state psychiatric hospital system.

We appreciate Assemblywoman Sweeney’s interest and support.
