A conversation with two of my clients yesterday sparked some research on water filtration—curious what your current process is, if any.
Here’s what I’ve learned after researching different water filtration and purification methods:
Boiling water reduces bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause health concerns. While most tap water is technically safe, I try to minimize exposure where I can due to my weaker immune system—which is what originally led me to start boiling my drinking water.
Boiling water is not the same as distillation, so it doesn’t remove naturally occurring minerals (which was a concern of mine at first). Distillation also removes sediment, whereas boiling does not.
That brings me to filtering.
-A Brita filter helps remove sediment and chlorine (which my tap water is high in) and noticeably improves taste.
-The EHM alkalizing filter adds calcium and magnesium—both important for bone health—and raises the pH. There’s limited research supporting claims about alkalized water reducing inflammation or cancer risk, but I did recently take a class that discussed how certain foods can acidify or neutralize the body, which made this interesting to explore.
So for now, I’m sticking with my current process:
• boiling water to reduce bacteria while keeping minerals
• filtering it afterward to remove sediment and add calcium and magnesium
Is this system strictly necessary? Maybe not. But it’s also not harmful—and I’m comfortable knowing I’m not stripping minerals while taking a few extra steps that feel supportive for my body.
I like researching and refining my habits when it makes sense, so I’m glad this came up yesterday. Share your water filtration process! 😊
