I have scoliosis and find this headstand variation a challenge because it asks a lot of the shoulders. My one shoulder is taut and tight, the other one is unstable. To feel my way to steadiness, then balance, requires deep focus. I feel this practice (any yoga) is particularly helpful when a lot is being asked of us on many fronts. Where do we feel tight and closed off? Where do we feel unanchored? How can we find our way back to balance?

Snowflakes - not the modern use of the term...these Francophone yogis invented their own ‘flocons de neige’. In the last one, I was involved, but backed out to take the pic ;)

Every(body) is different...As we are individuals with different bodies, different personalities and different lifestyles, our needs are often complex and may differ greatly from one person to the next. Our yoga practice works best when it is truly aligned with what we most need.
Listen to your body…
…How does it feel? Yoga can be practiced by everyone, from the fit and flexible to the tired and tight. There are no body shapes that are ‘unyogic’ – yoga can work for us all!
There are many reasons why people decide to start practicing yoga. No matter where your starting point, the practice of yoga can be challenging and stimulating – or calming and restorative, depending on what you need that day. Modern lifestyles, characterized by rushing around and not paying attention to posture, can leave many of us feeling stressed, stiff and achy. Sometimes people come to yoga to help recover from an injury or to help combat the symptoms of conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis and scoliosis. Most of us at some point face some kind of physical limitation, and not all poses are suitable for all bodies. If you are undergoing treatment, the right yoga practice can support your recovery by helping to ease pain and stiffness, and promoting blood flow and relaxation.
Draw your focus inward…
…What is going on in the mind? Is there agitation, emotion, commotion? Sadness? Emptiness? A sense of being overwhelmed? The mind moves quickly, and mood states can rapidly shift. Sometimes, however, we may find ourselves stuck in a certain mood state, or troubled by obsessive or repetitive thoughts. Yoga and meditation can help us to break negative thought patterns and our cultural dependency on (over)thinking. The energy of the poses themselves and the mindfulness inherent in the practice encourage us to move from fear to courage, from resisting to releasing, and from insecurity to confidence.
