This season’s line sheet cover features artwork by Greg Ray, honoring his good friend Tony Alvis — a legend in this stretch of coast.

Tony tragically lost his life in the January 10, 2005 mudslide in La Conchita, just outside Ventura, California. He was helping evacuate neighbors in the tight-knit surf community when a wall of mud — nearly 20 feet high — tore through, taking everything in its path.

Greg survived the disaster after being trapped for nearly eight hours in an airpocket between a house and a VW Bus with a 2×4 through his femur before being airlifted to safety.

Since 2008, we’ve had the honor of working with Greg. A true original, his life has been shaped by curiosity, craft, and adventure — including sailing a tree across the Pacific from San Diego to the Marquesas.

His work carries the depth of those experiences — and a life as remarkable as the art itself.
