What is diagnostic ultrasound? 🤔
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(Hint: they aren’t just for pregnant patients!)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ultrasound is used in musculoskeletal medicine to shed light on any soft tissue issues. (Think: tendons, ligaments, muscles, and nerves.)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sure, MRIs and xrays are valuable, but they require the patient to be completely still while ultrasound can see tissues under movement. And sometimes ultrasound can pick up issues that were completely missed by other imaging.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We also use ultrasound to guide us to the exact location for treatments. Since injections are often within millimeters of the precise location of soft tissue damage or inflammation, ultrasound makes treatments infinitely more successful.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even better? We offer this service right here in our office.

Why does a baby or child need Osteopathic Manipulation?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The process of being born is super tough on mom, but also on baby.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The research done by Viola Frymann, an American osteopathic doctor, studied more than 1,500 babies periodically across an eight-year period. She examined all babies within the first five days of birth (most were checked within the first 24 hours).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
According to this study, 90% of newborns suffered the effects of birth trauma (associated strain through the neck and cranial areas following birth).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"This study revealed that approximately:
✅ 10 percent of the newborn babies had perfect, freely mobile skulls or cranial mechanisms.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ 10 percent had severe trauma to the head, evident even to untrained observers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ The remaining 80 percent all had some strain patterns in the cranial mechanism."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Osteopathic Manipulations help correct these issues in order to optimize the baby’s growth and development.

What if you looked at your health “conditions” and “diagnoses” in a new way?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead of labeling them as maladies, consider them to be a sign that your body is adapting to its environment.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Justin Ohm introduced this shift to me in his recent article in Pathways to Family Wellness magazine.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Despite this amazing capacity, this seemingly miraculous ability to adapt to our condition, we have a tendency to label such adaptations as a condition, a malady, a diagnosis,” he said.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He uses the desk chair as an example. If your back aches day in and day out thanks to endless office work, it’s adapting to its circumstances, and the circumstances need to be changed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe you should take a break to stand every hour or so. Or maybe you need a more ergonomic chair.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When we consider the beautiful ways we adapt to our circumstances, we can appreciate all that our bodies do for us.

If you're looking for a non-surgical option for your orthopedic issues, have you considered regenerative medicine?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In our last post, we talked about the different methods we can use to approach your unique case. In today's post, SWIPE ➡️ to learn about the differences between the three.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️ PRP is the least invasive of the three.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️ Liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure and is generally well-tolerated with low risks.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️ Bone marrow aspiration involves puncturing the bone to obtain the marrow, making it a more invasive procedure compared to obtaining lipo aspirate. (But don't worry! We will walk you through the entire process and help you feel at ease.)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each of these regenerative medicine approaches offers unique benefits and applications. The choice of which method to use depends on the specific medical condition being treated and the patient's individual needs and preferences.

Regenerative medicine/orthobiologics uses stem cells. But where do we get them? And how?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️ First, we want to emphasize that we ONLY use your body's own stem cells (never donor cells).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then, based on your unique case, we decide whether we need to use growth factors from your blood (PRP) or extract stem cells from lipo aspirate or bone marrow.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let's explore the key differences between PRP, Lipo aspirate, bone marrow. ⬇️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
〰️ Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): PRP is not a source of stem cells but rather a concentration of platelets derived from your blood. Platelets contain growth factors that can stimulate tissue repair and regeneration. PRP is obtained by drawing a small amount of blood and then spinning it to isolate the platelets.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
〰️ Lipo Aspirate: lipo aspirate involves using adipose tissue, commonly known as fat, as the source of stem cells. The fat is collected through a liposuction procedure and then processed to isolate the stem cells.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
〰️ Bone Marrow: Bone marrow contains a rich source of various stem cells, including hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). These stem cells are typically obtained from the pelvis through a bone marrow aspiration procedure.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In our next post, we'll talk about the different properties of each type.

The Osteopathic Way

As Osteopathic Physicians, our doctors approach any ailment with an open mind and a unusual toolkit. Drs. Fischer and Knight are able to use their hands to diagnose and treat dysfunctions present in the body - recognizing the role of all types of tissue in the body. They are able to help with any type of musculoskeletal complaints (back pain, headaches, etc.) They are also trained to see things from an Orthopedic perspective and use injections to help heal tissues that may have been injured for many years.
