National Nutrition Month, celebrated each year during March, focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
Our patients always ask, "How do I feel better?" At MPSI, we recommend lifestyle modifications including regular daily exercise and a diet rich in antioxidants. The best source of antioxidants comes from plant-based foods - ie. fruits and vegetables. With our modern lifestyles, we are constantly eating on the run and many of us are operating at high levels of stress. Food is the best source of nutrition, but if you don't have time to eat healthfully, please supplement your diet with a safe, high quality nutritional supplement that is high in antioxidants. For specific recommendations, please comment below or contact our office.
Antioxidants: Why are they important?
Antioxidants are substances that may protect your cells against free radicals, which may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food or when you're exposed to to***co smoke or radiation.
Antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E and carotenoids, may help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Other naturally occurring antioxidants include flavonoids, tannins, phenols and lignans. Plant-based foods are the best sources. These include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices, and even cocoa.
As a bonus, fruits, vegetables and whole grains high in antioxidants are also typically high in fiber, low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and good sources of vitamins and minerals. So enjoy the variety.
