Hello folks! As many of you know, the transfer from Health Net Services to TriWest has been a train wreck for providers as well as for beneficiaries. They should have been prepared for this changeover, but they were not.

On that note, my in-network provider entry is no longer under my name but under my business name instead. (Link is in the Linktr.ee in my bio)

If you are a Tricare beneficiary and want to utilize your doula benefits under the Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration, please ask your provider for a GENERAL REFERRAL for doula services (have them attach the waiver of approval letter) OR you can request a doula referral under my business name (Mum's the Word). My NPI and my name are not in the system for some reason, but you can still work with me as long as we have one of these referrals. If you need an example, contact me, and I will email it to you.

I am currently the only Tricare-approved, in-network doula in Monterey County. Others are coming, but it will be a while. I am also a midwife serving our community. Please be patient with me as I navigate the influx of beneficiaries wanting support as well as supporting my clients already on the books.

Always happy to bring my Midwife bags to career fairs! After attending the Los Arboles - - Career Day, I was invited to attend Pajaro Middle School's Career Day. I love sharing what I do.

By the way, students are always fascinated by the birth stool. The reactions I get when sharing what it's used for always cracks me up. I had one brave soul sit on it at the last Career Day. Let's see what happens today!

Wearing my Midwife hat at Career Day . Educating middle schoolers about Midwives and the important work we do in supporting birthing families.

Discovered while shopping for a doll to put in the birth tub. So glad to have found her! She is representing all the different types of people giving birth at home and in birth tubs. Her name is Sydney. 🥰

You guys were sure busy in February. 🤭 November was a crazy, busy birth month. Five births total, three over four days, with two on one day, just this past week. 😳😀 Clients challenged me in the best ways. 🌸 I continue to learn and grow. Remember Imposter Syndrome? She's still around, but the more experience I'm given, the more she quiets herself. I shouldn't blame it all on her, though. I'm my own worst enemy (aren't we all?).

Each birth is so unique. Each parent that brings their baby Earthside is amazing. Regardless of hospital birth, homebirth, cesarean, or vaginal...people who give birth have such strength and resilience. And love. So. Much. Love. I'm in awe of every single one that I'm invited to attend. 💟

And then, I receive these beautiful gifts of love and gratitude from clients. 🥰 I'm filled with my own gratitude that clients choose me to support them along their way, whether it's their first birth or their fifth. 🩷

On that note, I'm off call for a month! I'm not always great at self care, but I must find a way for sustainability. Oh, and I completed my fourth year as a Licensed Midwife.

So...here's to year five and year 24 as a doula. Thank you all for loving on me and supporting my work.

~Michele

I'm heartbroken. Devastated. And on the other hand, so incredibly grateful for Penny's wisdom over the years. She was a true class act, acknowledging that ALL people deserved to feel safe, heard, and respected during birth. She was truly like no other birthworker.

Her books are loved and respected, and used in so many trainings...for doulas, midwives, childbirth educators, physical therapists...

I am honored and blessed to have attended many of her trainings AND having her join us at Mum’s the Word at Chautauqua Hall in Pacific Grove many moons ago.

Rest in peace, Penny. You are loved and will never be forgotten.

One more thing on my checklist is complete!

✅️ Michele Nizza, Medi-Cal-approved doula! ✅️

This is just another offering for our community that I can provide. For those pregnant people who have Medi-Cal, they no longer have to pay out of pocket for a doula if I'm available, and they hire me. Apparently, the California Department of Health Care Services understands the importance of moving quickly to get doulas signed up. I submitted my application exactly two weeks ago and am now approved. 🙏

There is still a lot of work to do to make perinatal services equitable in our community, but this is a start. I'm happy to be here.

✅️ TriCare-approved doula ✅️

✅️ ICAN Leadership training finished! (Waiting for approval to get our first meeting on the calendar). ✅️

✅️ PSI Training...registered! Donation link to help me with travel expenses is in my Linktr.ee in my bio! ✅️

(This post went out yesterday, before it was supposed to, so here we are again). ☺️

OH MY GOODNESS!

I just received word that I received a scholarship to attend the conference in Washington, DC, this July! Included in that scholarship is attendance at both trainings that I will need to apply for the Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C).

"Congratulations! You have been selected to receive a PSI Perinatal Action Fund Scholarship to attend the PSI conference in Washington, DC."

This is huge for me. These trainings and this certification will add another layer to my offerings for our community.

If you feel inclined to support my travel expenses and my work while in DC, there is a link in my bio. All funds will go to my air travel, hotel expenses, car/Uber rides, and food. Receipts will be provided for transparency.

I told you I had a lot of irons in the fire. Stay tuned. There's more coming.

Hello again!

Today was a prenatal day in Soledad! Even though I have a clinic, it's nice to get out and drive to clients, especially when they have littles! Besides, I love driving through my county, seeing our agriculture fields, and watching the workers and their skilled hands, working hard to provide us yummy foods. I'm so grateful for them. 🩷 I loved being in the sunshine today, too. It was gorgeous and warm out as I drove down River Road and the 101.

On that note, did you know that I do homebirths in South County? South County is considered more rural because they don't have a hospital in town (it's a good 50 minutes away), and they have only one medical clinic in town. If you have private insurance, sometimes they'll approve what is called a Gap Exception since there are no midwives and hospitals close by. That means you might be able to get your homebirth accepted as in network!

For more information about midwifery care and homebirth, reach out! Links are in my bio.

I have so many irons in the fire, and not gonna lie, sometimes, I just can't keep up. I had different plans for my day today, but they got moved to this evening, so here's to getting cozy and strapping in. Hot tea, my binder for school, my old research packet from my days as a midwife student, and listening to my cat snore in my inbox...I'm ready to work on school and my ICAN training. Oh...and don't laugh at the wrong date and time on my lamp. I'll get to changing it someday...
