Applied behavior analysis (ABA) uses behavioral science to solve real-world problems. That means it's practices can be used ANYWHERE (not just in the school or clinic setting!) Through our ABA at Home series, we will share different ways ABA strategies, based on the science of behavior, can be used to make you or your family's lives easier!

May's ABA at Home is about alternatives to saying "no". Saying "no" all day can feel exhaustingโ€”and for kids, hearing "no" constantly can lead to frustration, meltdowns, or tuning us out. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ Instead, we can replace "no" with redirection or choices.

โœ… Instead of: "No, you can't have a cookie."
๐Ÿ”„ Try: "You can have a cookie after dinner, or you can have some fruit now."

โœ… Instead of: "No, you can't play outside."
๐Ÿ”„ Try: "We can play outside after it stops raining. Want to build with blocks while we wait?"

This keeps communication positive, clear, and constructive, helping your child learn boundaries without constant conflict. ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿง  Bonus: It helps teach patience, flexibility, and problem-solving too!

Through our ABA at Home series, we will share different ways ABA strategies, based on the science of behavior, can be used to make you or your family's lives easier! June's strategy: Offering choices!

Offering controlled choices can reduce tantrums and increase cooperation at home. When telling your child to do something, give them options to choose between (making sure you are OK with both options).

Instead of saying, โ€œPut on your shoes,โ€ try:
๐Ÿ‘Ÿ โ€œDo you want to wear your red shoes or your blue ones?โ€

Why it works:
โœ… Gives your child a sense of control
โœ… Encourages independence
โœ… Reduces power struggles
โœ… Keeps you in charge of the options

Youโ€™re guiding the behavior, but letting them feel empowered ๐Ÿ’ชโœจ
