Many, many words have the same lip shape patterns.

Successful lipreading depends on self advocacy and navigating common obstacles with strategies.

Some call it "speechreading" which includes more hints about what goes on behind the scenes but it's still doesn't adequately cover what we're really doing. A lot of mental work goes into the process as well.

Does lipreading help?

-Without hearing aids, or lipreading, I have a 30% word discrimination.
-With hearing aids, and without lipreading, I have about a 60% word discrimination. (Totally depends on the environment. The world is a noisy place outside the soundproof booth.)
-With hearing aids and lipreading, I scored a 90% word discrimination.

Yes lipreading helps. It all adds up.

In honor of National Deaf History Month, Disney+ will debut Disney Animation’s Songs in Sign Language on April 27, featuring three reimagined musical sequences animated in American Sign Language (ASL). 🎶✨

Directed by veteran Disney animator/director Hyrum Osmond, the collection includes “The Next Right Thing” (Frozen 2), “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” (Encanto), and “Beyond” (Moana 2), all thoughtfully adapted in collaboration with Deaf West Theatre. Rather than direct translations, the performances focus on conveying the emotion and meaning of each song.

A behind-the-scenes featurette will also explore the creative process behind the project. It’s a meaningful step toward making Disney storytelling more inclusive and accessible for the Deaf community.

Osmond, whose father is Deaf, shared, “In the majority of cases, we created entirely new animation. There were a lot of adjustments that we had to do within the animation to be true to the original intention.”

He shared the reasons he wanted to do this project: “One, sign language is one of the most beautiful ways of communication on Earth. If ever there was a medium to showcase sign language, it was animation. The other big reason for doing this project is to connect with the Deaf community. Growing up, I never learned sign language, and that barrier prevented me from really connecting with my dad. This reimagining of Disney Animation musical numbers helps bring down barriers and allows us to connect in a special way with our audiences in the Deaf community. I’m grateful that the Studio got behind making something so impactful.”

Anyone else shivering in the cold but thinking about spring break?
🏖️ Beach?
🏊‍♀️ Pool?
🌊 Water park?
✈️ Somewhere warm where the kids can swim all day?

Also spring break parent brain:
“Will people know how to get my kid’s attention in the water?”

That’s why this rashguard matters.

When my kid is splashing, swimming, or running off with pure vacation energy, this little message does some of the advocating for us.
Not because they need to be labeled.
Not because they owe anyone an explanation.

But because water is loud, chaotic, and fast, and a simple visual cue can mean:
• a lifeguard taps instead of yelling
• a staff member makes eye contact
• a grown-up pauses before assuming “they’re ignoring me”

It’s safety.
It’s access.
And honestly? It allows us to relax a little more.

Wherever spring break takes you — beach, pool, cruise, or backyard sprinkler — small things like this can make a big difference 💛
