TRUE or FALSE?
Let’s bust some common baby development myths together! 👶
Parents hear a LOT of mixed messages, so let’s set the record straight with some evidence-backed facts:
🔹 Tummy time starts day 1 — TRUE
Yes! You can start tummy time from day one. Early tummy time builds comfort with the position and promotes head control, digestion, and bonding. Supervised tummy time on the floor can and should start right away! Start with short sessions on a firm surface like a play mat or blanket.
🔹 Babies should be in jumpers as early as 4 months — FALSE
Babies don’t necessarily need to be in jumpers at all — and definitely not before 7+ months or before they can support their trunk and head independently. Early use of jumpers can place unnatural stress on developing hips and encourage poor posture (like tip-toe standing). Baby hips are still forming, and early full body weight-bearing can interfere with healthy joint alignment. Floor play is a safer, developmentally supportive alternative!
🔹 W-sitting is always bad — FALSE
W-sitting isn’t always inherently harmful. It’s common in children with hypermobility or low tone. It’s okay if used occasionally, but encourage variety (criss-cross, side-sit, long sit) to promote strength, mobility, and balance. If your baby is ALWAYS sitting in this position no matter what, come see us. 😉
🔹 Babies must be walking by 12 months — FALSE
The typical window for walking is 10–17 months. Walking before or after 12 months is still normal as long as other milestones are progressing. What matters most is confidence, stability, and purposeful movement…not the exact age.
Knowledge is power! Especially when it comes to your baby’s development.
