We got a message from CRNA sending special congrats to her mom, Karen Bryant (KGB), who just wrapped up a 40-year CRNA career at Brookwood. We love seeing that kind of dedication to the profession and moms who pass along the secret to the greatest job in the world. Congrats on your retirement, KGB! 🎉👏

Happy holidays to Alabama CRNAs near and far!
Proud to see our Alabama graduates holding it down across the country; including independent practice critical access hospitals.
Pictured above are Taylor Nix (Samford ‘20), Shannon Kolupaeva (Samford ‘20) and Kallie Beretta (UAB ‘20) working together over the holidays at a critical-access, independent-CRNA practice in rural Montana!

URGENT CALL TO ACTION for all CRNAs

A new proposal by the U.S. Department of Education would cap federal student loans for graduate degrees at $100,000. A separate 200,000 dollar cap would apply to professional degrees.

Under the current proposal, DNP and DNAP programs ARE NOT included in the definition of a professional degree. This means future SRNAs would only qualify for the 100,000 dollar cap, which is insufficient to finance a full nurse anesthesia education with federally guaranteed student loans.

This exclusion is unjustified and deeply concerning. It threatens the pipeline of future CRNAs and could worsen provider shortages across Alabama and the nation. Reduced access to graduate nursing education ultimately limits patient access to safe, high-quality anesthesia care, especially in underserved communities.

✍️ How to take action
1. Visit AACN’s advocacy page:
aacnnursing.org/policy-advocacy
2. Write to your U.S. Senator and Representative and tell them CRNAs and advanced-practice nurses must be included in the definition of professional degrees and must retain access to appropriate federal student loan levels.
3. Share this post and encourage your colleagues, students, and friends of the profession to act.

Alabama legislators got a firsthand look at CRNA education last week during a crisis simulation with UAB SRNAs, followed by a presentation highlighting the training and education differences between CRNAs and AAs. This gave our policymakers valuable insight into how CRNA training compares to that of AAs. Huge thanks to the UABSON Nurse Anesthesia Pathway team and our ALANA State Political Director, Krista Niedermeier, for helping show the difference advanced nursing education makes.

We’re proud to officially launch a new student initiative connecting SRNAs across all Alabama programs with each other and with the state association that represents them.

Introducing the ALANA Cohort Council!

The Cohort Council was created to give students a platform, a path to involvement, and a direct line to ALANA leadership. It’s a place for students to share ideas, build leadership skills, and get involved in advocacy from day one of their CRNA journey.

Whether you’re at UAB, Samford, Mobile, or part of the SNAP cohort — you have a seat at the table.

University of Mobile
Alabama’s CRNA programs have expanded-and continue to expand-to meet the needs of patients and the profession. 📈
UM launched its nurse anesthesia program in 2024 with an inaugural class of 12 students. Another 12 joined in 2025, and enrollment is set to grow to 15 in 2026 and beyond—a 25% increase! While the numbers are smaller, every seat represents another highly trained CRNA in the making. This new program marks an exciting step forward in strengthening anesthesia care across Alabama.

The UAB School of Nursing DNP Nurse Anesthesia Pathway has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade! With 65 students enrolled this year and another 65 expected in both 2026 and 2027, the program is expanding its capacity and directly addressing the national shortage of CRNAs by preparing skilled anesthesia providers to meet workforce demands.

Alabama’s CRNA programs have expanded—and continue to expand—to meet the needs of patients and the profession. 📈
The Department of Nurse Anesthesia has been consistent in the education of nurse anesthetists even through the transition from the MSN to the DNP. To ensure graduates each spring, the faculty managed an overlap of curriculum for the cohorts of 2020 and 2021. The class size did not decrease with the transition. Since the class of 2021, 92% of students admitted are from Alabama or have significant Alabama ties. The progression of class size represents a 41% increase.

Did you know that in just five years, Alabama has increased the number of nurse anesthesia graduates by 86%—growing from 58 students in 2020 to 108 in 2025 as UAB and Samford expanded their classes and the University of Mobile launched its program?

And the growth doesn’t stop there! In 2026, the Somnia Nurse Anesthesia Program will graduate its first 7 Alabama students and UM’s graduating class will be 25% higher than 2025. That brings the statewide total to 118. That’s a 103% increase from 2020, officially doubling Alabama’s student output in just six years.

Alabama is dedicated to CRNAs. 💪✨
