Mentor Monday Spotlight: Brett Scruggs, CRNA | Baptist Medical Center Montgomery

Confidence grows when students are given the space to think and the structure to succeed.

Brett Scruggs consistently models calm, decisive leadership while allowing SRNAs to work through situations independently. That intentional balance of guidance and autonomy helps transform knowledge into real clinical judgment.

As SRNA Ryan Lang shared, Brett “trusted me to think through situations independently,” and that trust helped build confidence that extends far beyond a single rotation.
By empowering students to step into their decision-making role, Brett is helping shape thoughtful, capable CRNAs ready for independent practice.

Brett, your leadership is shaping clinicians who are prepared to stand on their own! 💫

The AANA Mentorship Program has been in existence for over 20 years, identifying and developing future leaders in nurse anesthesia. Programs nominate standout students, who are then paired with AANA leaders at the Mid-Year Assembly.

This year, UAB nominated Ryan Lang () who was paired with former ALANA President and AANA Board member Heather Rankin. Together, they spent the day networking, connecting with fellow residents, and preparing with the ALANA team to lead advocacy efforts.

A fantastic delegation of CRNAs and SRNAs from Alabama, alongside colleagues from across the country, met with lawmakers to advance priorities that protect patient access, support our workforce, and strengthen the future of nurse anesthesia. More than 1,300 CRNAs and SRNAs descended on the Capitol to meet with legislators on both sides of the aisle and advocate for our profession.

We want to give a huge thank you to our SRNAs. Your preparation, professionalism, and willingness to step into these conversations set the tone for the future of our profession. You showed up, spoke up, and represented CRNAs incredibly well.

We also want to recognize the CRNAs who took time away from their practices, families, and personal lives to be there. Advocacy requires sacrifice, and your presence made these conversations meaningful and impactful.

Special recognition goes to our Federal Political Director, David Gay, whose planning and coordination made this week productive, efficient, and as impactful as possible.

At a time when healthcare costs continue to rise and the need for skilled providers is greater than ever, utilizing CRNAs to deliver safe, high quality, and cost effective care is a common sense solution. Expanding access to care for patients, including our veterans, is more vital than ever.

Mentor Monday Spotlight: Joy McRee, CRNA | RMC Anniston Hospital

During a clinical rotation where students could choose their rooms each day, SRNA Taylor (pictured right) kept coming back to Joy’s room—and it’s easy to understand why.

Joy creates the kind of learning environment that can shape an early clinical experience in all the right ways. She helps new SRNAs settle in, builds confidence from the start, and makes room for growth without making the day feel intimidating. Especially in those first rotations, that kind of presence matters.

What stands out about Joy is the way she makes learning feel both productive and enjoyable. Students can ask questions, stay engaged, and keep building skills in an environment that feels supportive, approachable, and genuinely positive.
For a new SRNA, working with someone like Joy can make the transition into clinical feel more natural. That kind of experience sticks with students long after the rotation is over.

RMC Anniston is so lucky to have you, Joy! Thank you for your service to and support of the next generation of Alabama CRNAs!

Mentor Monday Spotlight: Josh Campbell, CRNA | USA Health Providence Hospital
Before the monitors are on and before the case begins, Josh prioritizes something just as important: how he connects with his patients.
As SRNA Scott shared (pictured left), Josh’s focus on communication is evident from the first moment of patient interaction, shaping how students think about their role before a case even starts. In an environment where time is limited, he reinforces how much those first impressions with a patient shape the entire experience.
Josh is intentional about how he approaches each patient from the start, taking time preoperatively to ask questions, listen, and understand what matters to them before moving into the clinical plan. He models how to build rapport quickly but meaningfully, showing students that even brief conversations can establish trust and set the tone for the entire anesthetic.
His influence extends beyond technical skills. It’s reflected in how students learn to communicate with purpose, build trust quickly, and approach each case with a patient-centered mindset.
Long after this rotation, it’s Josh’s approach to patient conversations that will stick with his students the most.
Thank you, Josh, for the way you care for your patients and invest in the students you teach! ⭐️

Mentor Monday Spotlight: Jessica Chisenhall, CRNA | Grandview Hospital

It’s Jessica’s genuine kindness that stands out first—and it’s what makes such a lasting impact.

She creates a learning environment where students feel supported from the start while still being encouraged to grow. There’s a calm confidence in the way she practices that sets the tone for the entire room, and she consistently takes time to explain her thought process so learning goes beyond observation.

As one SRNA shared, she “truly invests in her students,” and that is evident in the way she pours into those she teaches. Jessica is incredibly thorough and detail-oriented, catching the small things that make a big difference in both patient care and student development. Her teaching is grounded in practical, real-world insight that helps students go above and beyond in every case.

Jessica leads with intention, consistency, and heart, and it shows in everything she does.

Grandview is lucky to have her, and so are the SRNAs who get to learn from her! 🌟

Mentor Monday Spotlight: Tim Bruns, CRNA | Thomas Hospital

For many SRNAs, the first day in the operating room is unforgettable and the right mentor can make all the difference.

Tim Bruns is the kind of preceptor who turns those first clinical experiences into something exciting rather than intimidating. By creating an environment that feels welcoming and supportive, and he helps students settle in quickly and start building confidence from day one.

As one SRNA shared, Tim “broke things down in a way that really made sense,” helping concepts click early in training. It’s no surprise he’s become a favorite among students and someone they genuinely look forward to working with in the OR.

Mentors like Tim remind us that learning anesthesia can be both challenging and energizing when the right guidance is in place. 💫
