Sound advise for all outdoor programs.

In Search and Rescue, success isn’t just about skill — it’s about how we organize, communicate, and support each other when every minute matters. Within SAR teams, two roles show up on every mission: leaders and managers. They’re different and absolutely essential.

Managers keep the mission moving. They’re the ones making sure the right people, tools, and information are in the right place at the right time.

Leaders inspire action. They’re the ones who help others push through fatigue, uncertainty, and tough terrain. Every member has the potential to lead, regardless of role or rank.

In SAR, many switch between these roles without even realizing it. Sometimes you’re the one coordinating. Other times you’re the one inspiring. Both matter. Both make a difference.

Quite the story and improvisation to make a splint

Lying on the ground with her ankle snapped in half in the remote bushland of western Arnhem Land, her mind racing, and with no help or phone reception, Margie Moroney began to crawl.

A great article by Seth Hawkins!

A great article by Seth Hawkins!

Spinal care is evolving. Decades of routine immobilization lack evidence and may cause harm. New research and WMS guidance shift the focus to spinal cord protection, selective movement strategies, and prioritizing perfusion over rigid collars.

Excellent advise for all those who spend time in the outdoors

Staying mission‑ready isn’t optional—it’s part of the job. Maintaining solid fitness is one of the most important ways we ensure safety, effectiveness, and resilience in the field.

Search and rescue missions often require:

⛑Moving over uneven wilderness terrain for hours at a time
⛑Carrying a full 24‑hour pack and rescue equipment
⛑Participating in searches, litter carries, and extended field operations
⛑Staying alert and capable during overnight missions

Whether you’re preparing for SARTECH II certification or staying sharp for your next deployment, here are a few ways to keep your fitness mission‑ready:

⛑Build endurance with regular hiking under load
⛑Strengthen your core and legs for stability on uneven ground
⛑Train grip and upper‑body strength for equipment handling and litter carries
⛑Practice mobility and flexibility to reduce injury risk
⛑Maintain balanced, functional fitness—not just cardio or strength alone

Every responder plays a critical role in bringing people home safely. Staying fit means staying ready—because when the call comes, the team and the community are counting on you.

Train smart. Stay strong. Be ready.
