If your babies go to Little Lambs Child Development Center- I just want you to know that the staff jumped into action so very quickly and got those babies out and to safety ASAP today during the fire. They took complete ACTION and it was such a team effort to get all those kiddos out and they did it! Good job to all involved- and thank the Lord everyone was okay.

Vivian O'Nay and all involved in the fire- our hearts break with you, and you are in our prayers. If you need anything, please know the community is here to support and help you. 💚⚓️

Women are typically given 6 weeks to recover from pregnancy, but new research has revealed that the brain changes that occur during pregnancy can actually take 2-6 years to recover from, affecting memory, hormones and the woman’s stress response.

Forgetfulness, mental fogginess and difficulty concentrating are common complaints, sometimes referred to as “mom brain”. The massive changes in hormones like estrogen and progesterone during and after pregnancy affect brain chemistry. Progesterone, in particular, can cause drowsiness and contribute to mental fog. Also, the chronic exhaustion that comes with caring for a newborn significantly impacts memory and focus. Additionally, a mother’s priorities shift completely to her new baby, and the mental load of new responsibilities, anxiety, and stress can interfere with concentration and memory.

After childbirth, hormone levels like progesterone and estrogen, which were extremely elevated during pregnancy, drop dramatically and the hormone levels continue to fluctuate for months or even years while the body adjusts. These hormonal shifts, along with other life changes, can contribute to mood swings, anxiety and depression.

Furthermore, the body’s stress response undergoes significant changes during and after pregnancy. Pregnancy alters the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which regulates the body’s response to stress. Elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol have been linked to changes in the amygdala, a brain region involved in social and emotional development. While these changes are part of a normal adaptation to motherhood, excessive stress can increase the risk of anxiety and depression for the mother and may even affect the child’s neurodevelopment.

It is VITAL to give yourself grace and understand that these changes are beyond your control. I will put a few tips for coping with these changes in the comments section. Take good care of yourselves sweet friends and always ask for help when you need it.

🍂 Fall is in the air in Alabama—at least before 10 AM 🤪
And with pumpkins and Halloween decorations popping up everywhere, I had to pull out my favorite shirt:

“Pelvic Health isn’t Scary.” 👻

It’s true. Nothing is too taboo when it comes to your health. Whatever you’re going through, I can promise you:
✨ You’re not alone
✨ You’re not an anomaly
✨ You deserve care without fear or judgment

I know these topics can feel hard to talk about, but my goal is to provide a safe, supportive space where you can share openly and get the help you need.

So if you’ve been putting off seeing a pelvic health therapist because it feels “scary”… consider this your sign. There’s no better time than now to take that first step toward healing. 💚

Let’s talk about it:

I don’t currently treat male pelvic health patients. I hope to in the future as the practice grows, but present day I refer to a local provider who does treat men (so don’t worry, there is local help for those who may need it). 🤜🤛

But!

First lesson of male pelvic health is that, yes, men do have a pelvic floor AND, yes, they can also have pelvic floor dysfunction. 💫

One common question my female patients will inquire about for their husbands/partners is concerning……longevity or endurance in the bedroom. 😇 The good news is that there is research that supports helping with this, and it’s not just popping a little blue pill (which isn’t off the table, but some people may want to try other interventions before starting a medication).

So, *drumroll*, what does the research say? 🥁

You guessed it (maybe) - it’s exercise!! And specifically aerobic exercise! Aerobic activity (did someone say cardio!) is a powerful, evidence-based cornerstone for male pelvic health—one worth prescribing and celebrating, especially for those interested in non-pharmacologic options. 🎉

For my fellow nerds in the room, possible mechanisms include: enhanced nitric oxide production, insulin sensitivity, reduced inflammation, testosterone elevation, and improved vascular health—all supporting erectile function. 🤓

I’ll list the research in the comments (just some light reading 🤪), but one systematic review supports moderate-to-vigorous aerobic activities of 40 minutes, 4 times weekly for 6 months, as a valid non-pharmacologic treatment. 🤩

So, if you want endurance IN the bedroom, you may have to start with some endurance OUTSIDE the bedroom. 😉🏃🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

✨ Your Pelvic Floor Neighborhood ✨

Something I often see in pelvic health patients is a kind of “disassociation” between the bladder and the bowels. For example, if someone is leaking urine, they may zoom in on the bladder and completely ignore what’s going on with the bowels.

But anatomically, the bladder, uterus, and re**um are all next-door neighbors — and we want them to be friendly neighbors! When there’s pelvic floor dysfunction, it rarely affects just one house on the block. It can create trouble for the whole neighborhood.

When stool builds up in the re**um, it can put pressure on the bladder and irritate the pelvic floor nerves. This often shows up as:

• Urgency: Sudden, strong urge to urinate
• Frequency: Needing to go more often than normal
• Urinary incontinence: Leakage, especially urge-related
• Incomplete emptying: Feeling like the bladder isn’t fully emptied
• UTIs: Higher risk since stool and incomplete emptying can affect the urinary tract
• Bedwetting in kids: Very common link — treating constipation often improves nighttime accidents

💡 Remember! Pelvic health is about more than “just” kegels or leaking urine. It’s the total picture of pooping, peeing, passing gas, pain, and pleasure. If you’re having pelvic floor symptoms, we can help ID all the culprits.
