I am told that I am a strong, loving person. I have been blessed with an amazing and supportive husband, and I have been privileged to give birth to six wonderful children. I am a homeschool mom and alongside my husband we teach Sunday school and are the directors of the Awana program at our church. We are committed to family and serving others and I am excited to use my training and skills as a doula to encourage, support and serve clients during their pregnancy and postpartum time. My desire to become a doula has been building throughout the years. I kind of had the idea swirling around in the back of my mind and it changed recently from “Wow, I wish I would have known about doulas when I was birthing kiddos!” to “ I would really like to help expecting families have a peaceful, natural birth without having to deal with unnecessary intervention and interruptions.” And so began my search to learn and obtain as much knowledge, education and training as possible to be able to assist expecting moms, partners and families throughout the birth process. I studied with Child Birth International, spent time surveying birthing classes, shadowing professional midwives, and working with two experienced doula mentors (Tammy Sandel and Wendy Hinz). I am also currently taking child birth assistant classes with Cindy Lybolt a homebirth midwife who serves our area. I believe that information is the key to empowerment for all families. I am passionate that families have access to the most up-to-date, research based evidence to inform their decision making as they approach the birth of their child. And I am looking forward to educating, empowering, advocating for and encouraging families! Each woman’s birth is as unique as she is, and every woman will have different desires, needs, and preferences during pregnancy and childbirth. It will be my role as doula to support them in whatever choices they make regarding their pregnancy, birth and postpartum time. Hannah Bender

I'm mystified why docs are checking your cervix at 36/37/38 weeks when you are not in labor. Routine cervical checks are not necessary. Cervical checks should only be done after saying, "Would you like me to check you?" Or to be used in shared decision-making that involves induction or deciding methods of induction, distance from the hospital, uncomfortable symptoms indicating eminent labor, or because the patient wants you to. Let's stop doing unnecessary things just because "that's what's always been done." https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9fuWDfflQTs

Worldwide, 13 million infants are born preterm, and almost 1 million die within 1 month. But leaving the umbilical cord intact for at least 2 minutes after birth might reduce the mortality risk of premature infants by as much as 69% compared with immediate cord clamping, according to results from a....

Some mothers are concerned that they will always need to breastfeed baby to sleep. However, there are very positive benefits of "breast-sleeping".

04/11/2020

Your goal is to get 6-8 hours of sleep in 24 hours. Side lying breastfeeding on a bed with a firm mattress is a safe place to rest and sleep while your baby breastfeeds. Please note that it is never safe to sleep with your baby on a couch or chair.

As I sat rocking my baby after another long restless night 🌙 I wondered to myself...why does the rest of the 🌎 continue to innovate and forget about the breastfeeding and breast pumping mama’a that supply one of the most important nutritional substances (breastmilk) to a baby within their first two years of life, // Why are we always left behind and so often an after thought to the world that we play such an important part and role. It shouldn’t be that way and doesn’t have to be that way. 🤗 We are blessed to have women around the world that seek to innovate and place simplicity back in motherhood, and that my friend is worth an enormous ✋.

As childbirth educators and other perinatal professionals, we often talk to the families we work with about the benefits of delayed cord clamping for the healthy newborn (Mercer, 2018). There are also known benefits for delayed cord clamping for the preterm infant as well. (Fogarty, 2018). Note: Isn...
