What a CPAP does
Treats sleep apnea: By delivering pressurized air through a mask, a CPAP machine keeps the airway open during sleep to prevent breathing disruptions.
Can help with heartburn: A recent study found that CPAP therapy may also relieve the heartburn and cough that often accompany sleep apnea,.
Used in other medical settings: CPAP is not only for sleep apnea; it can support patients with conditions like acute respiratory failure by improving oxygenation.
Common challenges and solutions
Discomfort and skin irritation: Finding the right mask and fit is crucial and can take time.
Applying a water-based lubricant to the mask seal can help with skin irritation, and a proper fit minimizes air leaks.
Dry mouth or nasal congestion: This is often caused by dry air. Solutions include using a humidifier or heated tube, adjusting the machine's settings, and making sure the mask fits properly to prevent leaks.
Swallowing air (aerophagia): This can cause bloating and gas. A medical provider can help adjust the pressure settings, or a different machine like a BPAP (bilevel positive airway pressure), which has different pressures for inhaling and exhaling, may be a solution.
Important facts to know
It can take time to adjust: Don't be discouraged if you find it difficult at first. The first 30 to 45 days can be challenging, and it's okay to take it slow by wearing the mask for short periods while awake to get used to it,
Proper fit is key: There are many different types and styles of masks. If you're struggling, speak with your doctor or a specialist about finding a better fit.
