An exhibit of photography featuring portraits of Vermonters with disabilities, by The Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council (VTDDC) is on display at the Vermont Statehouse cafeteria until May 23.

Every March, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM) serves as a powerful reminder that with the proper support and services, individuals with developmental disabilities are dynamic contributors to the community of their choosing.

VTDDC also wants to acknowledge a crucial truth: awareness is not a one-month initiative. The spirit of awareness, understanding, and action must be extended throughout the year.

Toward that end, VTDDC is sharing its collection of Story Portraits at the Statehouse.  Each Portrait features a past or present Council member, or a friend of the Council, talking about an issue that is important to them.  Their stories illustrate how Vermonters with developmental disabilities are contributing to their local community, just like everyone else.

The Inclusive Healthcare Partnership Project (IHPP) attended the Access VT’s first accessibility conference for state employees.

IHPP’s Project Supervisor Kirsten Murphy teamed up with Max Barrows from Green Mountain Self-Advocates to train over 100 state workers. Together they taught about plain language writing. The IHPP also shared its healthcare booklets with state staff.

"... But most doctors also say they have neither the time nor the specific education to provide quality health care to people with disabilities. Iezzoni’s research shows that only 40.7% of doctors said they were “very confident” that they could provide the same quality of care to disabled patients as they do to their nondisabled patients.

Other telling stats shed light on doctors’ lack of confidence on the basics of providing access: 35.8% of physicians reported knowing little or nothing about their legal responsibilities under the ADA, and 71.2% responded incorrectly about who determines reasonable accommodations for patients with disabilities. No wonder they fear ADA lawsuits. As a whole, doctors get a failing grade not only in disability health, but also in disability law.

Which leads to another main cause of inequitable health care: a medical school culture that is sorely lacking in disability competency curricula."

Recent research shows that a shockingly high percentage of doctors are ill-prepared to treat people with disabilities. Tim Gilmer investigates the causes and how we can fight for more equitable…

The Inclusive Healthcare Partnership Project (IHPP) will distribute its first set of plain language health information materials at the Voices and Choices Self-Advocacy Conference at Burlington’s DoubleTree Hilton Hotel, April 25-26, 2023. IHPP will have a display table at the conference with copies of free booklets, posters, and handouts about breast health, pelvic exams, and patient rights. Members of the IHPP team will also lead an interactive workshop with self-advocates to learn more about the challenges they face when receiving health services.

The IHPP was created by the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council, in collaboration with Green Mountain Self-Advocates. IHPP uses cartoon illustrations and plain language to ensure that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the information they need to take charge of their own health.

Members of the IHPP Team look forward to talking with self-advocates and support providers who stop by the IHPP display table at Voices and Choices.
