Meet Madison! Co-owner of Therapy Strides and occupational therapist ❤️

I am so excited to offer hippotherapy to the Western Slope of Colorado! I am originally from Texas, but I fell in love with Montrose and the surrounding areas many years ago when I traveled here for a summer fieldwork rotation.

Since then, I’ve gained experience in many practices including travel home health, outpatient neuro, skilled nursing, and acute care. My volunteer work as a board member of a non-profit horse ranch brought horses back into my life, and I’m excited to expand my work as an occupational therapist to include hippotherapy!

My husband and I are proud parents of 2 little boys, they keep me very busy when I’m not working at the ranch. We love hiking, camping, horseback riding, gardening, training our donkeys and horses, and generally just working on our little farm!

Amy and I are excited to help rehabilitate people through connection with horses and the use of equine movement!

Meet Amy! Co-owner & occupational therapist 🤍

I am originally from Massachusetts and I grew up obsessed with horses! I took weekly lessons and competed in my college equestrian club.  I moved to New Mexico after college and finally got the chance to lease a horse of my own where we could go trail riding whenever we wanted! I have been in Montrose now for almost 3 years and LOVE the access to the outdoors for camping, hiking, biking, and skiing.  I am so grateful for the opportunity now to get to combine my professional career as an OT with my love for horses.  I am looking forward to helping others increase their independence through the use of these amazing horses!

🤔What is hippotherapy?

Hippotherapy uses the movement of a horse as a therapeutic, rehabilitative treatment tool for improving an individual’s balance, strength, endurance, participation in activities of daily living, and more.

Hippotherapy involves a skilled and certified occupational therapist, physical therapist, or speech language pathologist to develop and implement an individualized treatment plan for each of their clients.

🤔What do you mean clients? Who benefits from hippotherapy?

Individuals with disabilities or other neurological impairments. This might include individuals with balance or strength deficits, autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, other chromosomal abnormalities, ataxia, head injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and more.

Hippotherapy provides many benefits to kiddos with Down syndrome. Benefits include improved balance, mobility, posture, muscle tone, core strength and sensory regulation (just to name a few)! Aside from riding, the close proximity to a horse where a kiddo can rub, pat, or hug, helps further regulate their sensory system. Hippotherapy also promotes social skills and emotional regulation. Plus it’s just plain fun!
