We want to make our patients aware of an important change in New Jersey regulations regarding the prescribing of controlled substances. Under updated New Jersey regulations, physicians may only prescribe controlled medications to patients who have been physically seen in the office within the past three months. If a patient has not had an in-person visit within that time frame, we are legally unable to send in refills or issue additional prescriptions for controlled medications.
This regulation applies to all controlled substances, including common medications for ADHD (such as stimulant medications) and certain anxiety medications.
What this means for you:
You must have an up-to-date in-office visit (within the last 3 months) in order for us to prescribe or refill any controlled medication.
If your visit is overdue, we cannot ācall inā extra medication, provide emergency refills, or extend a prescription until you are seen in person.
It is your responsibility to schedule follow-up appointments in advance to avoid interruptions in medication.
For college students:
This change may especially impact students attending school away from home. If you are taking a controlled medicationāsuch as stimulant medication for ADHDāyou must either:
Schedule in-person visits with our office every three months when you are home, or
Establish care with a licensed provider near your college who can evaluate you in person and manage refills locally.
Unfortunately, we cannot override these requirements, as they are mandated by state regulation.
We strongly encourage you to plan ahead and schedule follow-up visits early to ensure continuity of care and avoid gaps in medication.
If you have questions about your specific situation, please contact our office. We are happy to help you navigate this transition.
