We shared about Triploidy in Monday's post. This post shares a story about a little one with triploidy. We have a family in our own Mama Bear Care community who received a diagnosis for triploidy for their little girl. Rose had many unusual issues within her pregnancy with her baby measuring smaller and tests coming out inconclusive, but finally Rose learned the reason for her much different pregnancy; her baby had an extremely rare diagnosis of full triploidy.

Read more about her pregnancy, diagnosis, and her sweet little Julianna Grace in our blog post --> https://mamabearcare.org/a-much-different-pregnancy/

What is triploidy?

Triploidy is a rare chromosomal condition where a baby has three copies of every chromosome instead of two — totaling 69 instead of 46. This extra set of chromosomes affects every system in the body and is often associated with other conditions such as growth restriction, heart defects, and differences in the brain, the kidneys, and in arms and legs. Mosaic triploidy is when a baby has three copies in more than one chromosome, but not all.

A triploidy diagnosis is different from trisomy, in which only one chromosome exists in three pairs.

The two children pictured on our graphic have a mosaic triploidy where not all of their chromosomes have an extra set, but more than one are triploid. Many times testing may indicate triploidy, but not immediately whether the pre-born baby has full triploidy or mosaic.

A full triploidy diagnosis is considered life-limiting, yet every baby’s life — no matter how brief — carries immense worth and value. There is hope for mama bears walking this path.

At Mama Bear Care, we walk beside these mama bears — those who receive serious diagnoses like triploidy, Trisomy 13, Trisomy 18, and other life-limiting conditions. 🐻

Will you join us in wrapping them in love and support?
💝 Become a donor today and help us care for mama bears carrying immense love for their babies through difficult diagnoses.

Dear Lord,

Be with the mothers with a too-soon goodbye
Who had loss within the womb or during birth,
In their arms or during the sudden and unexpected.
This month is commemorated as a memorial, but
A memory can both be precious and painful.
Be with them as they hold both the memories
and as they stand with the grief.

Give them the strength to remember
Each precious moment and smile.
Give them the strength to remember
Each precious moment and cry.

We thank you Lord for You are gracious.
Even in the pain, You give us joy.
Help us cling what is good,
Even while we grieve.

Embrace in your love,
The mother with a too-soon goodbye.
And we cherish the thought of eternity,
When once again we meet.

In Jesus name,
Amen

Wave of Light – October 15th

Every year on October 15th, people around the world take part in something called the Wave of Light — a beautiful, global tribute to babies gone too soon through pregnancy or infant loss.

At 7:00 p.m. local time, families, friends, and supporters light candles in memory of those precious little ones. Because it happens in each time zone across the world, the candles create a continuous wave of light that circles the globe for 24 hours — a symbol of love, remembrance, and unity.

For those who have experienced loss, this moment can be deeply personal — a way to honor their baby’s life and know they are not alone. For those who haven’t experienced this kind of loss, participating is a meaningful way to show compassion and support for grieving families.

Whether you light a candle in memory of a specific child or simply to stand beside those who mourn, your light becomes part of something greater — a shared hope that no family’s loss will go unseen or unremembered. 🕯️

Please light a candle in memory of all the babies gone too soon. For those who have experienced loss, we invite you to share a photo and/or your baby's name in a comment below as we honor and remember these precious lives together.

Recently at our Mama Bear Banquet we had the privilege of hearing a father's perspective. Tim, a father of 4 girls and baby Vincent James, shared about his and his wife Kim's journey of receiving a devastating diagnosis earlier this year. Despite doctors' negative comments and counsel, Vincent's parents chose LIFE. Vincent only knew love from his parents and sisters. His all-too-brief 26 weeks in his mother's womb left a profound impact on his family and community.

Read Tim's own words about their journey on our blog: https://mamabearcare.org/larue-family-story/

Today is World Mental Health Day ❣️

We know that both during any pregnancy, mental health is important. Mamas have a huge job in growing a baby, and sometimes it can be hard physically, emotionally, and mentally. If you have a woman who is pregnant in your life, be sure to see how they are doing and support them as they handle the new experience of a pregnancy.

For our mama bears who have received a life-limiting prenatal diagnosis, mental health isn't just important, it's essential. Pregnany isn't supposed to be shadowed in grief, but this is the journey our mamas face. We are thinking and praying for you today. We see the hope in the storm.

Have you taken steps to care for your mental health? We include a few ideas on our reel, but please contact us if you are needing to seriously focus on your mental health. We have counselors available and we would love to pray for you specifically.

In our blog post today, we are honored to introduce Brooke and her little sweetie Skylar who let doctors know that every life and diagnosis can be different. When given a prenatal diagnosis of Trisomy 18 and pressured to abort, Brooke chose to instead spend each minute she was given with Skylar. Her daughter's life was not negotiable.

"I want to convey to others that Skylar’s life held immense significance. To doctors, she was diagnosed with a terminal condition, but to us, she was our daughter first and foremost, and our love for her was unconditional."

October is Dwarfism Awareness Month!

Dwarfism is a form of skeletal dysplasia that affects about 400 babies born each year in the United States. There are approximately 400 different types of dwarfism, but the most common is achondroplasia. This condition is generally defined as an adult height of 4 feet 10 inches or less. Though dwarfism is considered a disability, most people with this condition live long and full lives.

Even with the fact that most people with dwarfism live full lives, "In cases [when parents do not have dwarfism], prenatal diagnosis of achondroplasia was associated with a 75% termination of pregnancy rate, often occurring late in pregnancy."(1) While dwarfism shouldn't be a life-limiting prenatal condition, it has sadly become one.

At Mama Bear Care, our mission is to support parents who receive a life-limiting prenatal diagnosis for their child. We offer information, community, and care packages to all families who need our help.

If you are a parent of a child with dwarfism, we want you to know there is hope for your baby! Though many are pressured to end their pregnancies with a baby diagnosed with dwarfism, we want you to know that it is not a life-limiting prenatal diagnosis. If you need support through this journey, please connect with us.

One of the questions we receive about Mama Bear Care is, “What do you provide to mothers?”

Some organizations call it “services.” But really, we consider it more a question of “How do we serve?”

➊ Two community groups for mama bears:
• From Diagnosis to Delivery — for mama bears who have received a life-limiting diagnosis and need support, but also for those who delivered and are now caring for their child with a diagnosis.
• From Heartache to Hope — for mama bears who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss.

➋ Mama Bear Care Coordinator: Our Mama Bear Care Coordinator reaches out to each mama bear to meet them where they are in their pregnancy, answer questions, and offer help. She also hosts birth planning sessions in our community group.

➌ Hope Boxes: We send Hope Boxes to mama bears who join our community to encourage them, provide hope, and share important information. As a pregnancy progresses, we send additional boxes depending on the need.

➍ Counseling: Allen and Patricia Cooke walk with mama bears through pregnancy, after delivery, and for some, during loss. We believe counseling is vital as mama bears need to tend to their mental and emotional health during this journey.

Did you know October is pregnancy and infant loss awareness month? Mothers who have experienced loss often do.

If you haven't experienced this personally, consider how this deeply this affects a mama. Not only does it hurt physically to experience a miscarriage, it hurts emotionally and mentally due to the grief and pain of the experience . . . and the pain of people's uncareful words. "It wasn't meant to be." "You lucked out." "It's probably a good thing." "Maybe you weren't really pregnant." Then for those who lost an infant, silence. People wondering what to say . . . say nothing. The silence feels like no one cares. If a woman around you experiences loss of their pregnancy or of their infant, be present, say how much you are hurting with them in this loss, and how you wish you could take away the hurtful words if you could. Be the helper, not the source of more pain.

The pain doesn't stop with the loss. When a mama is trying again, every pregnancy test brings back on the worry and reminder, "what if it happens again?" Fear replaces joy. Be there for her! She needs to know that you are hoping for her and belay the fear with encouragement. It won't go away, but friends help. A lot.

So when we discuss pregnancy and infant loss awareness month . . . be aware. Be awake. Don't drop out on a mama who is hurting, but instead stay there. Be available. You've got this.

When told that abortion is their only option, 80% of parents will abort their baby with a severe congenital anomaly. However, when given the option of perinatal hospice support, 80% of parents in the US choose to carry their baby to term.

Information is life, both to the babies and to the mother's hearts.

Carrying to term is physically safe for mothers and studies have found psychological benefit to mothers who continue their pregnancy following a "lethal fetal diagnosis." It is so much easier for a mama bear to ask for support with the grief when she has lost her baby, compared to how hard it feels for mothers to ask for support who have ended their pregnancy. Both need support.

Mama Bear Care supports mama bears who are choosing life for their baby, but we are very willing to connect hurting mamas to resources. Our heart goes out to mamas who made a choice without further information from medical staff or made a choice without realizing that ending a pregnancy does not alleviate the grief.

If you have received a life-limiting prenatal diagnosis and need support, contact us! If you want to be a part of the support these mama bears need, please contact us to become a monthly supporter! You help make an impact on the 80% who find out about support.
