Stories from the Streets: Hope in Every Backpack

I met Joshua and Lori for the first time this year. They were sitting on the sidewalk and seemed hesitant when I waved them over. Many people living outside are cautious because of past negative experiences or fear of being hurt.

I asked if I could give them a Christmas gift 🎁. Joshua said “No way!” and “THANK YOU!” multiple times—and then asked for a hug 🫂. Lori was nearly speechless. Moments like these are powerful; simple gestures of kindness and connection matter more than most people realize.

It was so nice to meet you both, and I hope you enjoyed your treats 💙 No pics because I didn't know them well yet! They loved Daisy though!!!

Try to stimulate the vagus nerve! There are devices out there made to stimulate the vagus nerve. One is called Sensate. You place it over the sternum and it works by toning the vagus nerve. A second device is Alpha-stim and it clips to your earlobe. The third is Gammacore. It delivers small electric impulses to the neck. Be sure to consult your doctor before use.

There's an app for that! Just download a stress busting app. There are many to choose from. Here are a few Insight timer has more than 300,000 free guided meditations. Unwinding Anxiety (29.99 per month) is also a popular app. I recommend youtube (free version) for meditation and breath work. The calm app also is popular among my patients. Even your Fitbit has mindfulness and breathing goals!

Confession: I forgot to turn the lights on this morning—and everything was still okay. A good reminder as we head into the final stretch before Christmas 🎄

With about 10 days to go, stress can sneak in quickly. One of the most effective tools I’ve seen help clients over the years is simple organization.

📝 Make lists
• Gifts & budget
• Cleaning
• Grocery shopping
• Food prep

Keep them in your phone’s notes app or one dedicated notebook. Reusing and updating lists each year saves time, energy, and mental load.

🎁 Reduce gift stress
Consider themed gifts (pajamas, coffee mugs, gym gear) or gift cards. Most people appreciate simplicity more than perfection. Most people prefer cash or gift cards!

The goal isn’t a perfect holiday—it’s a manageable one. A little planning and mindfulness can go a long way in protecting your peace and enjoying the season.

Adaptogens is a unique class of herbal medicines that helpthe body adapt to stress. I frequently recommend Ashwaganda (withania somnifera) which helps reduce anxiety and lowers cortisol levels and can improve sleep. The dose is 300 mg 2x's per day. Stories from the Streets: Hope in Every Backpack 🎒

I got to see my friend Anthony, whom I’ve known for about three years. He once had a job, but maintaining it was difficult when regular showers weren’t available and uniforms were hard to keep clean.

Anthony was excited to see me and remembered my truck right away. He shared that he was thrilled because his dog had puppies 🐶😍❤️. I was able to share dog food and treats, a big hug 🫂, a backpack 🎒, and extra propane for him and his friends.

Knowing they’ll have supplies and warmth brings peace to my heart. Stay safe and warm, Anthony 💙

The Season of Sharing Project 2025

Stories from the Streets: Hope in Every Backpack 🎒

I got to see another familiar face and meet their new pup 🐕💙. I had dog food and treats, which made our visit even sweeter—and I think it’s why we talked a little longer than usual. The dog approved of me 🐾😊

They shared they didn’t have a heat source, so I loaded them up with an extra pack of hand warmers. They told me they rely on these items to stay warm 🥶 and expressed their gratitude. I’m thankful they at least have food for themselves, food for their dog, and a few supplies to help keep them safe.

Dogs often provide protection, companionship, comfort, and even warmth for people living outside. We also provided resource lists, information on free bus rides, and shelter options if the weather becomes extreme.

The Season of Sharing Project 2025

Stories from the Streets: Hope in Every Backpack 🎒

Yesterday while handing out backpacks 🎒, my heart was so full. I got to see my friend Rhonda, who was ready for us at her camp—supplies in hand and arms open for hugs 🫂. She was an official helper out there supporting others. Thank you, Rhonda! Your kindness and gratitude never go unnoticed 💙✨

She even recognized Darla and introduced herself—despite never meeting before. Several of her camp mates came up, thanked us, and said, “We know you—Rhonda told us about you.” They even shared they have a coffee ☕ gift card for me next time. Their thoughtfulness was inspiring.

Homelessness isn’t just statistics—it’s people, relationships, and dignity. Thank you to every donor who made this possible 🙌 Your generosity makes a real difference.

What's all the talk about magnesium!!! This is one I recommend to my patients to talk to their doctor about. Magnesium has so many benefits, 1 of which is reducing anxiety! I recommend 400 mg of Magnesium Complex. Start lower at 100-200 mg with gradual increase to 400 mg. Remember magnesium can have side effects. I also recommend Epson salt baths 1 cup per bath, soak 30 minutes. Epson salts magnesium absorbs through the skin.

Inositol is found in small amounts in foods like fruit, beans, grains, & nuts and it can also be taken as a supplement. It has been used to treat anxiety and panic attacks. Normally people start with 3 grams & slowly increase dose to approximately 12 grams.
