The Mustang community is on fire currently with recent whistleblower posts of trainers abusing horses.
As someone who clears trauma from horses, let me tell you….this is NOT limited to Mustangs. It IS happening pervasively throughout the horse community and it IS happening with both big name and lesser-known “professional trainers”. I clear horses from “trainers” in the vast majority of my cases.
It is heartbreaking and devastating to see and hear how these very special and magical creatures are being treated.
To hear from so many horses about their treatment and what they have endured at the hands of humans is a big part of why I do what I do. I have stood and cried with a horse that showed me he was hit in the head with a rock. I have felt the grief of a horse who had to live alone with no horse friend for years. I have felt the anguish of a horse stalled for hours every day with little to no turnout or pasture.
I am not perfect. I have become frustrated with my horses. But I don’t abuse them, and I use those moments to do better and rarely if ever become frustrated anymore. And if I do, I walk away until I get perspective. (Learning and applying positive reinforcement has been a game changer in that for me, and thus my horses. I am happy to share that knowledge if you too need help with frustration levels.)
As with any pervasive problem, there is no one solution. Bringing attention to it is definitely a first step and that is starting to happen. On a personal level, each of us as horse owners has a responsibility to be the best trainers ourselves that we can be. And make no mistake, every moment we spend with our horses we are training them. Every.single.moment.
We always have a choice. And if we make a mistake, then we do better next time. Know better, do better. Abuse however is not one or five mistakes. Abuse is a pattern of behavior.
If you are considering help for your horse with someone who has more expertise than you, trust your gut about them. Trust your feelings and how they make you feel. If you feel resistance, doubt, or worry about them, or if they pass judgment on you or others, they are not your or your horse’s person.
And don’t feel pressured into thinking they are the only one who can do it. You WILL find the solution.
If on the other hand, you feel peace, confidence, and zero judgement, then that person with expertise may be the solution you are looking for.
