The school year is back, and Fortius PT would like to offer some safe tips and tricks to make sure our talented high school athletes remain healthy and fresh all season long.
A 2019 study revealed that nearly 5.2 million injuries occur yearly amongst high school athletes.
So what can we do to begin to properly reduce this drastic number? Multiple factors such as nutrition, sleep habits, exercise routines, and psychosocial influences should all be considered when determining the wellness of our young athletes.
-Exercise-based injury prevention including careful resistance training, plyometric/jumping activities, and mobility maintenance have shown a 46% reduction in sports related injuries in individuals above the age of 14 years old (Rossler et al. 2023)
-Proper eating habits and being mindful of our mental health can also impact our performance and injury outcomes.
- High school athletes fail to achieve the recommended 8-10 hours of sleep needed, and better injury outcomes have been noted with teens who go to bed and wake up earlier (Ungaro et al. 2022)
Let's make sure we are providing the healthiest opportunities for preventing and treating injuries in these athletes all season long. And feel free to contact Fortius PT with any questions about health and wellness, or if you are interested in setting up future appointments!
