The Hidden Ways Black Women Self-Harm

During Su***de Prevention Week, I want to name what often goes unseen. For many Black women, self-harm doesn’t always look like crisis—it hides in everyday survival.

✨ Self-silencing to “keep the peace”
✨ Overfunctioning & perfectionism until exhaustion feels normal
✨ Tolerating harmful relationships in the name of loyalty

Prevention is more than stopping an attempt. It’s about recognizing the slow burns, the quiet ways we harm ourselves, and choosing healing instead.

Reflection: Where might you be harming yourself in silence, overextension, or relationships that don’t honor you?

You deserve rest. You deserve joy. You deserve wholeness.

Courage is not about silencing fear—it’s about choosing to move forward even when self-doubt still whispers.

This year, I’ve made a commitment to courage.
✨ Courage to name perfectionism as an old pattern.
✨ Courage to own those patterns with self-awareness, no excuses.
✨ Courage to trust myself more deeply with the goals ahead.
✨ Courage to rest, to take space, and to make no apologies for either.
✨ Courage to declare my transformation—unapologetically.

Self-doubt has a cost. It drains energy, limits opportunities, and keeps us small. But courage? Courage creates freedom, peace, and possibility.

Where in your life are you ready to choose courage over self-doubt?

I share more of my journey in this podcast episode: The Cost of Self-Doubt

When did you first realize you were performing a version of yourself?

Maybe it looked like:

Pretending everything was okay when it wasn’t.

Making yourself smaller to make others comfortable.

Wearing a smile when your heart was heavy.

This performance was survival — but it isn’t freedom.

✨ Freedom is showing up as your whole self. Without apology. Without the mask. ✨

If this speaks to you, share this post with someone who’s learning to live beyond performance.

Perfectionism isn’t about high standards. It’s about protection.

Protection from judgment.
Protection from failure.
Protection from shame.

But what starts as protection becomes a prison.
Perfectionism doesn’t keep you safe — it keeps you small.

The Performance Tax of Perfectionism is real.

Every time you:

Rewrite an email three times before sending.

Stay up late perfecting something no one else will notice.

Second-guess your worth even after giving your best…

You’re paying that tax with your time, your energy, and your joy.

Here’s your reminder: You are allowed to show up human. You don’t have to be perfect to be powerful.

Presence is more sustainable than perfection.

If this resonates, share this post with a sister, friend, or colleague who needs the reminder.

Perfectionism often wears the mask of “high standards.”

But for many of us, it’s really a shield.
A shield from criticism.
A shield from rejection.
A shield from being “found out.”

The cost? Feeling stuck. Overthinking. Disconnecting from yourself.

✨ You are not broken. You are becoming. ✨

If this resonates, save this post to follow along with the series. Tag a friend who might need this gentle reminder.

“To every sister who’s ever felt alone in her healing…”

We are stronger when we heal together.

BIPOC women have carried generations of resilience—often without a space to rest, share, and be fully seen.

Our healing journeys may be personal, but they are never meant to be walked alone.
When we gather in community, we:

Remind each other we are not “too much” or “not enough”

Share stories that validate our lived experiences

Learn tools that help us protect our peace and reclaim our power

This is more than connection—it’s solidarity.

Whether you’re navigating stress, unlearning perfectionism, or simply longing for a safe space to exhale, you belong here.

Let’s keep building spaces where BIPOC women can heal, grow, and thrive—together.

Ever catch yourself saying “yes” before you’ve even thought it through?

Or tweaking your work for the 10th time because you’re worried what someone will think?

Or biting your tongue to keep the peace?

These are people‑pleasing patterns, and while they might look like professionalism, they quietly drain your energy, stall your growth, and erode your confidence.

In this carousel, I’m breaking down 3 common patterns — and the hidden costs they carry:
1️⃣ Overcommitment2️⃣ Approval‑Seeking3️⃣ Silencing Discomfort

💡 Save this so you can spot them in real time — and start releasing them.

Perfectionism often hides behind the phrase “I just have high standards.”

But if we’re honest, for many of us, it’s something else entirely — a shield.
A shield from criticism.
A shield from rejection.
A shield from being “found out.”

It’s a way to protect ourselves from pain… but it comes with a cost:
✨ Constant overthinking
✨ Feeling stuck in place
✨ Disconnection from who we truly are

Over the next few posts, I’ll be sharing how perfectionism works beneath the surface and gentle ways to loosen its hold.

If this speaks to you, save this post so you can follow the full series. And if you know someone who’s been struggling with the weight of “having to get it right,” send this their way.

I used to believe people-pleasing was kindness.
A way to keep the peace.
A sign that I was dependable.

But here’s what I’ve learned:
It was actually a boundary I built against my own needs.

Every “yes” I gave without checking in with myself was a quiet “no” to my own energy, dreams, and well-being.

If you’ve ever:\n• Overcommitted to avoid disappointing someone
• Said yes when every part of you wanted to say no
• Smiled through exhaustion to be “easy to work with”

…you know the cost.

This week, I’m practicing unmasking that habit — even when it feels uncomfortable.

Your turn: What’s one “yes” you wish you could take back?
