I believe that the most general goal of therapy is to develop a healthier relationship with ourselves, with one another and with the world around us. Often this has to do with figuring out how to resolve internal and external conflict in ways that are constructive. When we feel under attack, most of us revert to "fight or flight" methods by avoiding conflict, 'numbing' out the underlying pain, or becoming aggressive and destructive. Often times people say to me, "What's the point of standing up for myself instead? I think the point is to know and speak our own truth in a way that is also most likely to keep us safe. In this way we can find both freedom (from the tyranny of symptoms and hopefully from the tyranny of others too) as well as a deeper connection and commitment to ourselves and others. This, by the way, is also my definition of happiness.

Learning how regulate our most intense emotions (rather than exploding or numbing) is one of the most important things we can learn in relationship to ourselves and others. Dr. Dana is very good at teaching us how. As she says learning how to get back to the ventral part of our nervous system is where ‘the magic happens’. Worth watching!

This is about using the Polyvagal Theory in clinical practice. Deb Dana talks about how a focus on experientially understanding the role of the autonomic nervous system helps to creatively involve clients in their healing process.

Just discovered Michelle Chalfant and her podcast, “The Adult Chair” from not one, but two clients this week. I like this distinction of hers between unhealthy and healthy guilt. She’s worth checking out!

Even though this article is more about education than psychotherapy - it has a lot to say about how adults can best heal through and after this pandemic as well.

Learning loss is real and needs to be addressed, but how we go about it should be commensurate with the size of the moment.

I updated my website - because my office address has changed but I took the chance to update the entire website as well - I hope you like it - it’s much artsier now, so it reflects that side of me as well as all my training and expertise.

As we grow and recover, we also hopefully uncover parts of us we have neglected or have been too afraid to show the world. Our naturally creative sides often get down played until we reclaim them. And it’s so much fun when we do!

Throughout Covid, I have enjoyed taking photos, painting, writing and designing. For-example, I designed my logo when I first started my own practice, but never really told anyone about it. Recently, I really enjoyed freshening up the design with a new color, as well as re-designing the whole website and now I feel so much better about it. I really hope you like it too. And that you are having, or will take the chance, to find and enjoy your own creative sides.

A couple of months ago I heard my sweet friend Meenadchi ( on IG) say they don’t believe in self-regulation. This stuck with me so much and I’ve spent a lot of time ruminating about how to integrate this information personally.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We talk so much about self-regulation in the parenting world so this threw me for a bit. It was such a small thing to say but it impacted me in a huge and embodied way because it affirmed a hopeful truth.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
See, to me it means that I’m never ever alone, that I’m never without the resource to bring me back to integration and alignment, that I’m always able to remember truths about how supported I am by the things I take for granted.⁣⁣

The earth under my feet! The air in my lungs! And by the things I don’t take for granted, because I’ve worked hard to create, but that I forget are available when I’m feeling alone in my mothering. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Yesterday, I went to pick up a white board in San Clemente. It was about 40 minutes away and when I got there, the house was next to the beach. I stopped. I played with the water as it teased me by barely missing my feet as the sea foam approached my toes. I made the rocks my friends. I played with mis amigos los sand crabs. I shed some tears of joy as I allowed myself to feel the warmth of the sun🌞 . So much joy. We co-regulated, hermana mar y yo 🌊. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I share this with you to remind you how supported you are by not just me and the people around you, but by the very force of love that created you. Always here!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Part of Remothering/Reparenting myself has been reconnecting to my first mother, Madre Tierra. This, like all things is a practice.⁣⁣
