As a pediatric speech pathologist, I am often asked, “How many words should my child have?”

☁️ Milestones are important because they help us identify when a child may require some extra support.

🌈 However, as a mom myself, I can understand how seeing milestone charts can be a big source of stress and anxiety.

☂️ The number of words presented in this post is a very wide range! Every child is different and develops at their own pace.

☀️ However, if your little one is not reaching “milestone” numbers, it is beneficial to reach out to a speech pathologist to determine if your child may benefit from speech therapy.

📌 Remember, word count is just ONE piece when it comes to language development. We look at a variety of language skills when it comes to assessing overall communication.

🚨 This is a common concern that I hear from parents. What do I do if my child is trying to tell me something, but I can’t understand them?

☁️ Get face to face. Get close to your child so that they know what they have to say is important and you are trying. Closely following their mouth movements might be helpful as well!

🌈 Be a detective. Sometimes we have to use our best judgment by picking up on some clues with what they are trying to say. Are they trying to telling to tell us something they want or need based on the time of day? Are they making eye contact with something as they are trying to say what they need?

☀️ Have them show you! If it is something that is concrete have them take your hand and take you to what they want or need.

🪴 Repeat back to them the words you DO understand. This helps with their confidence and lets them feel like they are being successful with what they are trying to say. This will also motivate them to continue trying!

🌸 Validate their feelings. Let them know you are trying and you are sorry you are having trouble understanding them. Remember, children need to know that what they have to say is important!

👶Check out this Speech Sound Development Chart to see which sounds we expect by age.

‼️Keep in mind, this is just a guideline with some variation in the ages between 2-3 years old.

🌈However, if your child has surpassed any of these ages without developing these sounds, is making frequent sound errors, or is difficult to understand, it might be helpful to initiate a speech and language evaluation.
