One of the 9 Pilates Principles is Whole Body Movement. When practicing Pilates, it’s important to engage the entire body (including breathing) in a coordinated manner, not just the muscles that are being targeted.

Thinking about your first Pilates class? Here are a few things you should know before you step into the studio:

1. You do not need to be flexible. Pilates is how you build strength and mobility, not something you need to already have.

2. It is harder than it looks, and that is a good thing. The small, controlled movements are designed to wake up muscles you did not even know you had.

3. Precision matters more than speed. Slow and intentional will always beat rushed and messy.

4. You will probably shake a little. That is your body getting stronger in real time.

5. Your breath is everything. Learning to connect your breath to movement will completely change the experience.

6. Everyone was new once. No one is judging you. The Pilates community is welcoming, supportive, and cheering you on.

This principle consists of creating a graceful, smooth, and continuous movement. We often use transitional exercises to move from one side to another. For example, Eve’s Lunge on the Right, with a transition of Down Stretch, and then Eve’s Lunge on the Left.

Kneeling leg slides are SAFER than traditional standing leg slides, and works the core more effectively. The 15 to Fit Method Split Carriage allows for both legs to be even, unlike doing standing leg slides with the platform. It is more comfortable and balanced, which allows for more variations depending on the needs of the client.

At 15 to Fit Method Pilates, we do things differently. Our method incorporates movements that occur naturally in our everyday lives. It involves more spinal extension and articulation, it helps to release the hip flexors while strengthening the abdominals, and it involves more rotational movement of the spine.
